The census indicates they have been married 5 years and they had two children, one of whom is still living. That child is Essie who was born in March 1900 and is shown as 2 months old.

James Henderson II appeared as head of household in the census enumerated July 15, 1850 Information was found on Page 352A, Reel 432-624, Dwelling 4, Family 4. James was shown at age 36 as a married white male born in North Carolina. He was listed as a farmer. Betsy was shown at age 30 as a married white female born in North Carolina, wife of James. They were shown with six children all born in North Carolina: son, John (age 13); daughter, Mary (age 11); daughter, Nancy (age 9); son, Hiram (age 5); daughter, Adaline (Adeline, age 4); and daughter, Winny (Winnie Ann, age 1).      James is not listed in the 1860 Chatham County NC Census. He married Alphia 'Alphice' Campbell on July 21, 1864.      James is shown in the 1870 Chatham County NC Census living with his second wife, Abbia (Alphia, age 27). Also living with him is his son Hiram (age 23) and Hiram's family - wife, Gabella (age 18), Manly (John Manley, age 4), Emphenia (Euphenia, age 2) and Durant (age 1). There are also 4 black and 1 mulatto farm laborers living with the family. James Henderson II left a will on November 3, 1879 at Chatham County, NC, Item 1: I hereby notify and confirm all the gifts made by me to the children of my first wife Betsy. Item 2: I give, devise, and bequeath all the rest and residue of my estate, real, personal and mixed to my wife Aphia and to her children share and share alike. She last (the said Aphia) a child's share of the personal estate and one-third of the real estate during her life and after her death the said share of personal estate and one-third of the lands to be divided equally between her children. Item: 3: Aphia executrix Witnesses: John Manning O. S. Poe. He died in 1885 at Chatham County, NC.
