The census indicates he and Mary have been married for 14 years and that all three of their children are still living. The children referred to here are his children with his first wife. There are no children of Neal and Mary Elizabeth Allen indicated in the census. Neal and Mary are not listed in the 1910 census. It is not known if they are dead or if they have gone to live with one of his children. None of Neal's children by his first marriage are found in the 1910 Census. Of that sturdy and independent class, the farmers of Arkansas, none are possessed of more genuine merit and a stronger character than he whose name stands at the head of this article. Mr. Watson is a native of Tennessee, born in Bedford County, November 20, 1843, but was principally reared in Pike County, Ark., where he has become well and favorably known. He received but a limited education in this State on account of the breaking out of the war, and in 1862, he enlisted as a private in the Confederate Army, Company C, Nineteenth Arkansas Regiment, under Captain Watson, and was in the battles of Chickamauga, New Hope Church, and others. He was wounded at Chickamauga, and this kept him from the field for two months. After recovering, he was in the Georgia campaign, was at the battle of Arkansas Post, at which he was captured, and taken to Camp Douglas, Chicago, where he was retained for three months. In 1863 he was exchanged. After cessation of hostilities, he returned to his home in Arkansas, followed the carpenter's trade for some time, but at present is engaged in cultivating the soil. He was the sixth of seven children born to Walter and Margaret (Jones) Watson, natives of South Carolina and Tennessee, respectively. The parents resided in the last named State until the father's death, which occurred in 1846, at the age of thirty-six years. The mother then moved with the family to Arkansas." Prior to settling in Pike County AR Lackey William Self and his brother, Lewis [n.b. Lackey had a son named Lewis and a brother named Lewis] were known to be in the Bellevue Valley in the Saint Genevieve District of Upper Louisiana (present day Washington County, Missouri). There the two of them signed Section 26 of a petition regarding the appointment of a new Governor for the Territory of Louisiana. Lewis was the 24th person to sign and Lackey William was the 25th. There is no record that Lackey bought land but Lewis had laid claim to two different sections of land. He has a record of a plat dated February 21, 1806 and certified on February 28, 1806 for "two hundred and ninety-two arpents [a French unit of measure equal to about 0.85 acres] and forty-six perches [a French unit of measure] of land situated on Bellevue district of St. Genevieve" and he has a record of a plat dated June 21, 1808 and signed by a John Steward for "five hundred arpents of land, situate on Big river, district of St. Genevieve". These facts indicate that Lackey and his family were in the Washington County area of Missouri until at least 1806 and maybe even after 1808. Since this is the same area that Miles Austin the father of Steven F. Austin was known to be there is speculation that Lackey and Lewis were part of the 300 families that became Austin's Colony in Texas. There is no record that Lewis became part of Austin's Colony. But we know that Locky Self was given an original "Old 300" grant [the name comes from the fact that Stephen was given the right to grant land to a colony of 300 people in the Mexican province of Texas. He, in fact, only issued 297 such land grants] by Stephen F. Austin on July 22, 1824. There was a Locky Self (and family) listed in the Census of Texas (which included citizens from 1821 to 1845). We know Locky sold his land in Texas on October 15, 1826. We have a Lackey Self listed in the 1829 Sheriff's Census of Clark. We also have Lackey William Self listed in the 1830 Pike County Arkansas Census. The Texas census data as it applied to Locky Self between 1824 and 1826 appears to be consistent with what we know of Lackey William Self and his family as shown in the 1830 and 1840 Pike County Census records [see below for a more detailed analysis of the census data]. Thus indicating that Locky Self and Lackey William Self are the same person and that Lackey moved his family to Arkansas between 1826 and 1829. Because the records we have of the early Texas census do not indicate the exact year at which the information was collected we will use the last known date we have for Lackey in Texas, 1826. There were several families in the Bellevue Valley area that became early settlers in the Clark and Pike County areas of Arkansas which may account for Lackey moving from Texas to Arkansas. It is possible that Lewis stayed in Missouri after Lackey moved to Texas. Lewis later moved to Arkansas. Lackey and Lewis apparently settled in an area near the three forks of the Little Missouri River in the region where Murfreesboro now stands. Lackey William Self is listed in the 1830 Clark County Arkansas Census between the ages of 50 and 59. He heads a household with 1 male between 5 and 9 years old, 1 male between 10 and 14 years old, 2 males between the ages of 15 and 19, 1 male between 20 and 29 years old, 1 female 4 years old or younger, 1 female between 5 and 9 years old. Also listed is one male between the ages of 50 and 59, presumably Lackey William and one female between the ages of 40 and 49, his wife. He is listed in the 1840 Pike County Arkansas Census between the ages of 70 and 79. He is shown as the head of household of a family with 1 male under 4 years old, 2 males between 15 and 19 years old, 1 male between 20 and 29 years old, 1 female between 5 and 9 years old, 1 female between 10 and 14 years old, 1 female between 15 and 19 years old, one female between 20 and 29 years old. Also listed is one male between 70 and 79 years old, Lackey William and 1 female between 50 and 59 years old, assumed to be his wife. Lackey William Self is listed on the Pike County tax rolls every year from 1834 through 1842. He is not shown in the 1850 Pike County Census. It is believed he died during the year 1842. The information from the Texas census indicates Locky Self was between 40 and 50 years old; which would indicate he was born between 1776 and 1786. Lackey William Self was shown as born between 1761 and 1780 in the Pike County Census records. We don't know much about his wife at this time but we know she was shown between the ages of 40 and 50 in the Texas Census and between 40 and 49 in the 1830 Clark County census. The ages of the male children in the Texas census were: two between the ages of 1 and 7; and two between the ages of 7 and 16. These ages are comparable to the ages of male children in the 1830 census. The female child in the Texas census was shown as being between the ages of 1 and 7 there is a comparable female child in the 1830 census shown as being between the ages of 5 and 9. The 1830 census indicates two more children then are shown in the Texas census: a baby girl under 4 years old (Nancy, who was born in Arkansas in 1828) and a male between 20 and 29 years old (probably the eldest son of Lackey William Self and who may well have traveled to Arkansas prior to the Texas Census. The information in the Texas Census, the 1830 Clark County Arkansas and the 1840 Pike County Arkansas Census indicate the Lackey William Self was born between the years of 1761 and 1786. The 1840 census information for Lackey William Self is out of line with the information in earlier census records (it indicates he aged about 20 years between 1830 and 1840). Assuming that the 1840 anomaly was due to an error then we can narrow the birth years for Lackey William Self to between 1771 and 1786. The census records mentioned above also indicate his wife was born between the years of 1776 and 1790. The 1830 and 1840 records indicate that she was born between 1781 and 1790 which are consistent with the ages given in the Texas census. So for this work we will use the range of 1771 to 1786 for the birth of Lackey William and we will use the range of 1776 to 1790 for the birth of his wife. Based on information in the Texas Census and in the 1830, 1840 and 1850 Pike County Arkansas Census records we can enumerate the children of Lackey William Self. (1) an unknown male child who was born between 1801 and 1810; (2) Lewis born between 1811 and 1815; (3) David S. born between 1811 and 1815; (4) Forgus born between 1816 and 1820; (5) William Daniel born between 1821 and 1825; (6) an unknown female child born between 1821 and 1825; (7) Nancy born between 1826 and 1829. Also shown within the household in 1840 but not in 1830 are (1a) an unknown female child born between 1811 and 1820; (2a) an unknown male child born between 1821 and 1825; (3a) an unknown female child born between 1831 and 1835; (4a) an unknown male child born between 1836 and 1839. Since the oldest unknown male child (1) was not in the 1840 census with Lackey William we surmise he has either established a household of his own (apparently not in Pike County) or he is living as a boarder with some other family or he died prior to 1840. David and Lewis are listed in separate households in 1840. Forgus married Mariah Jenkins around 1840 and it was considered possible that the unknown female (1a) was his wife. But since Mariah Jenkins was born around 1824 the unknown female (1a) was too to be her. Nancy did not get married until 1845 and David did not get married until 1842. So the unknown male (2a) and female (1a) are not their spouses. So we are left with the following possibility. Because there are two adults (1a and 2a) and two children (3a and 4a) shown in the 1840 census that were not shown with the family in 1830 it is likely that they were a family boarding with Lackey William Self's family. [More research needs to be done to resolve, if possible, the unknown people.]. Lackey William Self was born between 1771 and 1786 at MO. [There is some evidence that he was born in either Tennessee or Virginia.]. He married Jane ______ circa 1806. [probably in Missouri]. |
