It was thought that the body had lain there about 42 hours before it was discovered. Me. McMenis had left his son's home about three o'clock to go to his daughter's and it is thought that he died just before reaching there, and as it is a very little used road the body was not discovered until Friday morning. An inquest was held over the body, and it was the verdict of the jury that Mr. McMenis came to his death from heart failure brought on by acute indigestion, from which he had been a sufferer for sometime in the past. He owned real estate values at $400 and personal property values at $575. Also living in the house (perhaps as boarders) were Elizabeth Bixby, age 63 born in Missouri and Margaret Bixby, age 20 born in Arkansas. David W. and Joseph David both served in the same unit (Company B, Fourth Arkansas Volunteer Cavalry, United States of America) during the Civil War. They enlisted on December 20, 1863 in Benton, Saline County, Arkansas. David W. was 40 years old and Joseph D. was 19 years old. There appears to be some confusion in the War Department records regarding the two men due in part to the fact that both men appear to have been addressed as David or Dave. The best records indicate David W. served until March 28, 1864 when his unit was disbanded. It can be assumed that David W. moved to another company within the Fourth Arkansas when Company B was disbanded. (The Fourth Arkansas was not mustered out of service as a whole unit March of 1865.) The records are in conflict as to his rank. Some documents say he was a Private and others say he was a Sergeant. Additional confusion is introduced by the fact that Mary Ann states he is home on furlough in May of 1864. It looks like the best we can say is that David W served until he was murdered on May 4, 1864. His military record indicated he was 5 feet 7 1/4 inches tall. David Winston Alford died on May 4, 1864 at Pike County, AR. He was shot and killed by Rebel Scouts while home on furlough. His wife wrote the following description of the incident on a General Affidavit on July 21, 1891. "I am the widow of David W. Alford. My husband was shot and killed on the 4th day of May 1864 by Rebel Scouts. My husband was at home on furlough. The Scouts took his furlough from him and shot and killed him and took his furlough and money." He was buried at Harts Chapel Cemetery, Curtis, Clark County, AR. |

Joseph David Alford was born on May 5, 1844 at Monroe County, AR. [In an affidavit submitted with his claim for a Civil War Pension (number 1,207,239) Joseph David claimed to be born in Monroe County Arkansas about 18 years before he enlisted in the Army in the Civil War in November of 1863. Additionally his marriage certificate to Martha Ann Anthony date August 17, 1888 indicates he was 44 years old. If his birth day is May 5 then he would have to be born in 1844 to be 44 years old in August of 1888.].
He was the son of David Winston Alford and Mary Ann McMenis.
He was enumerated with David Winston Alford on the Pike County, AR census dated November 16, 1850; David was shown at age 6 as a male born in Arkansas. The Fourth Arkansas regiment was organized at Little Rock December, 1863 and attached to the Post of Little Rock, Arkansas, 7th Army Corps, Dept. of Arkansas, to May, 1864 during the time Joseph was active. Their primary duty station during that time was Little Rock, Arkansas. The unit participated in several minor actions until it was mustered out in 1865. However, Joseph was honorably discharged in March of 1864 at the rank of private. He saw action in skirmishes at the Saline River on February 15, 1864 and Cedar Glade on March 1, 1864. He married Martha Ellen Jourdon, daughter of James Jourdon and Delila ______. Joseph David Alford married Delila "Puss" Jourdon, daughter of James Jourdon and Delila ______. He had a son William Joseph (b. 1865) and a daughter Martha J. (b. 1867) with Delila "Puss" Jordon and he had a daughter, Mary Jordan (b. 1868) with Martha Ellen Jourdon while married to their sister, Margaret Jordon. There is no record that he was ever married to either woman. In fact, all the depositions taken when he applied for a Civil War Veterans Pension indicate he had only three wives, Margaret Jourdon, Elizabeth S. Jourdon Pyburn and Martha Ann Anthony. He was listed as a head of household on the Pike County, AR census dated June 22, 1870. He was found in Antoine Township, page 199, Redland Post Office, Dwelling 12, Family 12; Joseph D. was shown at age 25 as a married white male born in Arkansas. His occupation was farmer. The Pike County Marriage records for this period are reconstructed from other extant documentation since the originals were lost to fire. These reconstructed documents may not be 100% accurate. In a letter written by Abner A. Alford on February 18, 1916 (in support of Martha Ann Alford's Widows Pension Claim dated April 6, 1915) he state that Joseph David married Elizabeth Pyburn in 1876. He further states that she died on September 5, 1887.]. He was listed as a head of household on the Pike County, AR census dated June 22, 1880. He was 44 years old living in Hot Springs, Garland County, Arkansas and she was 20 years old living in Bear City, Montgomery County, Arkansas.]. He was listed as a head of household on the Pike County, AR census dated June 2, 1900. He was found in Muddy Fork Township, page 14b, ED 87, Dwelling 14, Family 14; Joseph was shown at age 56 as a married white male born in May 1844 in Arkansas. His father was born in Alabama. His mother was born in Tennessee. His occupation was farmer. He owned his farm free and clear of a mortgage. He could neither read nor write but he spoke English. He had been married thirteen years at the time of the census. He purchased 120 acres of land in Pike County Arkansas form the United States General Land Office on 3/31/1906. The family apparently moved to Choctaw County in 1908 because Doctor John D. Moore of Sawyer Oklahoma states in a letter dated March 14, 1916 (sent in support of a Declaration for Widows Pension filed by Martha Ann Alford on April 6, 1915) that he knew Joseph Alford for about two years before his death. Joseph David Alford died on April 8, 1910 at Choctaw County, OK, at age 65. [He died on April 8, 1910 of heart disease according to Doctor John D. Moore of Sawyer, Oklahoma.]. He was buried at Sawyer, Choctaw County, OK. |
Delila ______ was born circa 1809 at NC. She married James Jourdon circa 1832. |
James Jourdon married Delila ______ circa 1832. |
Martha Ellen Jourdon was born in 1849 at AL.
She was the daughter of James Jourdon and Delila ______.
Martha Ellen Jourdon married Joseph David Alford, son of David Winston Alford and Mary Ann McMenis.
She had a son William Joseph (in 1867), a daughter Mary Jordan (in 1868) and a daughter Pink Ann (in 1872) with Joseph David Alford. There is no record that he was ever married to Martha Ellen. In fact, all the depositions taken when he applied for a Civil War Veterans Pension indicate he had only three wives, Margaret Jourdon, Elizabeth S. Jourdon Pyburn and Martha Ann Anthony. She was enumerated with Joseph David Alford on the Pike County, AR census dated June 22, 1870; Martha E. Jordan was shown at age 21 as a single white female born in Alabama. Elizabeth S. "Bettie" Jourdon was born in 1841 at AL.
She was the daughter of James Jourdon and Delila ______.
Elizabeth S. "Bettie" Jourdon married John W. Pyburn circa 1857 at Pike County, AR.
She was enumerated with John W. Pyburn on the Pike County, TN census dated September 18, 1860; S.E. was shown at age 18 as a white female born in Alabama. She was listed as a head of household on the Pike County, AR census dated June 25, 1870. She was found in Antoine Township, Redland Post Office, page 2, dwelling 11, family 11; Elizabeth was shown at age 25 as a white female born in Alabama. Her occupation was keeping house. She could neither read nor write. Since William Joseph is shown living with Elizabeth and Delila is William Joseph really the son of Delila? It is said that Joseph David had an illegitimate child by each of two Jordan sisters, Martha Ellen and "Puss". We know Mary A. Jordon is the daughter of Martha Ellen and is shown living with her (and Joseph David Alford) in the 1870 Pike County AR Census. Can we conclude from this that William Joseph is the son of Delila? Annie Pyburn and John U (W?) Pyburn are mentioned in the 1880 Pike County AR Census. It is possible that Nancy D. and Delila married between 1870 and 1880 and no longer go by Pyburn or Jourdon. It is also possible that they died. We are pretty sure that Martha Ellen Jourdon is dead by 1880. William Joseph is shown living with Joseph David Alford. But there is no mention (that I can find) of Martha J. What happened to her? Elizabeth S. "Bettie" Jourdon married Joseph David Alford, son of David Winston Alford and Mary Ann McMenis, in 1876 at Pike County, AR. [The Pike Marriage records for 1834-1895 gives the date as around 1875. She was enumerated with Joseph David Alford on the Pike County, AR census dated June 22, 1880; Elizabeth was shown at age 35 as a married white female, wife of David, born in Alabama. Her parents were born in Georgia. Her occupation was keeping house. She could read but not write. Elizabeth S. "Bettie" Jourdon died on September 5, 1887 at Pike County, AR. The date of her death is fixed by testimony from William M Alford on March 22, 1917. In his deposition he states that she died on September 5, 1887. Other depositions support this date. |
Martha Ann Anthony was born on July 27, 1871 at Hot Springs, Garland County, AR.
She was the daughter of Henry Anthony and Tennessee Horner.
Martha Ann Anthony married Joseph David Alford, son of David Winston Alford and Mary Ann McMenis, on August 17, 1888 at Montgomery County, AR. He was 44 years old living in Hot Springs, Garland County, Arkansas and she was 20 years old living in Bear City, Montgomery County, Arkansas.].
She was enumerated with Joseph David Alford on the Pike County, AR census dated June 2, 1900; Marthy was shown at age 28 as a married white female, wife of Joseph D., born in July 1871 in Arkansas. Her parents were born in Arkansas. She could read and she spoke English. She had been married for thirteen years. She had six children and all six were still living at the time of the census. She was listed as a head of household on the Choctaw County, AL census dated May 20, 1910. She was found in Wilson Township (part of), Range 18, page 23B, ED 68, Dwelling 470, Family 470; Marthy was shown at age 42 as a widowed white female born in Arkansas. Her parents were born in the United States. Her occupation was farmer on a general farm. She rented the farm. She could read but note write. She spoke English. She had eight children, seven were still living at the time of the census. [The census taker wrote Joseph's name on the line first and added Marthy above it. Joseph died a month before the census was taken.]. There appears to have been some question as to her middle name. She was deposed at Sawyer, Choctaw County, Oklahoma on Sept. 16, 1916. In that deposition she says that her full and correct name is Martha Ann Alford. This was on page 8. On page 12, apparently having been questioned about a signature (Martha L. Alford on another document) she says: "I will also explain that my middle name is Louann or Lou Ann, I don't know which it is, I recollect now that Mr. Pressley said he would write to Washington and get a paper to fix up for me to sigh. He said he had put my name down as Martha L. Alford and that when I signed the paper I better fix that paper just as he had written it when he wrote to the pension office, so I supposed I ought to write my middle letter just as he wrote it, so I wrote it L just as he had written it. Now I believe I have told it just as it is." Martha Ann Anthony died on March 6, 1918 at Sawyer, Choctaw County, OK, at age 46. |
