John Davis I was born on April 15, 1802 at NC.
He married Nancy ______ on July 22, 1820 at Knox County, TN.
He was a farmer. The surname of John's wife is not known at this time. One researcher posted this comment on the Pike County, Arkansas forum on Ancestry.com, "When I was a teen, my grandfather told me the history of his family. My grandfather was born in Pike Co., Ark. in 1893. He told me that Nancy's last name was Reese." The 1820 Smith County, Tennessee Census showa a Jeremiah Reese with the following counts; males: 2-2-0-1-0-1; females: 0-1-3-0-1. One of the female is the right age to be John's wife, Nancy. There is a marriage between a Nancy Johnston in Knox County, Tennessee on July 22, 1820 [Davis, John to Nancy Johnston-issued July 22, 1820, Bondsman: Hugh B. Maget, Knox County, Tennessee; Davis, John to Nancy Johnston-issued July 22, 1820 married by Thomas Wilkerson, M.G., July 22, 1820, Knox Coounty, Tennessee]. Is this the right Nancy? Margaret Baumgardner used this marriage date on her family group sheets. Research continues. He was listed as a head of household on the Smith County, TN census dated October 1, 1850. He was found in Reel Number M432-896, Page Number 265B, Dwelling 738, Family 738; John was shown at age 49 as a white male born in North Carolina. He was listed as a farmer with real estate valued at $750. He was listed as a head of household on the Pike County, AR census dated 1860. He was found in Missouri Township, Dwelling 431, Family 431; John was shown at age 58 as a married white male born in North Carolina. He was listed as a farmer. Also living in the household were John Henson a male, age 10; James Henson, a male, age 7; and Thomas Henson, a male, age 5. All three of the Henson boys were born in Arkansas. Who are these Henson children? We can account for all the children of John and Nancy except Tabitha in the 1860 Census. So one idea is that the Henson boys were her children. There is no record of her marrying in Pike County but it is likely she married shortly after the 1850 census was taken (she was 24 years old in 1850). Apparently something happened to her and her husband around 1855. The result was that their children came to live with her parents. Another possibility is that the children were orphans and were taken in and raised by John and Nancy. As of this writing the above premises are just speculation more research is need. He was listed as a head of household on the Pike County, AR census dated 1870. He was found in page 215, Dwelling 45, Family 45; John was shown at age 68 as a married white male born in North Carolina. He was listed as a farmer with real estate valued at $400. Also listed in the household are Thomas Henson a male, age 16 born in Arkansas and Miles E. Davis, a male, age 14 born in Arkansas. Miles E. is the grandson of John Davis and the son of James William, who is dead by 1870. martha Ann, James's widow is living a few houses away with the rest of her children. He was listed as a head of household on the Pike County, AR census dated 1880. He was found in Page 436, Dwelling 55, Family 55; John was shown at age 78 as a married white male born in North Carolina. His mother was born in North Carolina and his father was born in North Carolina. John Davis I died on June 25, 1881 at Pike County, AR, at age 79. [One source says death occurred on Jun 23 1881 but the following obituary written contemporaneously with the event indicates otherwise. "On Saturday the 25th inst. (June 25, 1881) we lost two of our best farmers and citizens. Mr. John Davis about 79 years of age died at 12:20 o'clock Saturday morning after an extended illness of two months. Mr. J.T. Parsons son-in-law of Mr. Davis and who was there with him, went out about 4 o'clock in the morning to saddle his horse, intending to ride home, but finding the horse of Mr. R. Davis in the same stable, he proceeded to take it out and put it in another, and while placing the poles across the door the horse kicked at him and struck the pole which caused it to strike him across the spleen. After this he saddled his horse and returned to the house, and, while sitting there talking, he complained of his side and wanted to lie down, but before he reached the room, he fainted and fell to the piazza floor. He recovered once only to tell the story of the horse kicking him over the spleen, and then he died, just thirty minutes after the accident. Both these gentlemen were industrious farmers and good citizens, and we feel very sorry to lose them so suddenly." J.F. Louis, Wolf Creek, June 26 - Southern Standard, Arkadelphia, Arkansas, July 2, 1881.]. He was buried on June 26, 1881 at Saline Cemetery, Pike County, AR. |
