"Abner N. Henderson, Missouri Township, Brocktown post-office, Pike County. This prominent planter was born in Morgan County, Ala., May 4, 1838, a son of Abner and Levica (Alford) Henderson, natives of North Carolina and Alabama, respectively. His parents had a family of six children -four boys and two girls - viz., John W. (married Miss Elizabeth Covington), William P. (married Miss Caroline Burkitt), Abner N. (the subject of this sketch), Martha A. (deceased), Lewis M. (married Victoria Elam), Andrew J. (deceased), and Mary A. (deceased). The father was a farmer and millwright by occupation, and at his death owned 320 acres of land. He emigrated from Alabama to Arkansas, in December 18[4]4, locating in Pike County, and was prominently identified with the interests of this county until his death, which occurred in 1865; his widow followed him in 1881. He and [his] wife were both members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. The subject of this sketch was reared in Arkansas, and received such an education as the schools of that time afforded. After attaining his majority he engaged in agricultural pursuits. December 31, 1857, he married Miss Matilda Davis, a native of Tennessee (born August 19, 1837), by whom he has a family of nine children, viz., John M. (deceased), Emeriah D. (deceased), Abner L. (married Catherine Deal), Lucy A., and Richard F. (twins, married David M. Watson and Elizabeth Allen), Alcie A. (married Robert O. Patterson), Flora A., Samuel, J.T., and Rosa L. (deceased). Mr. Henderson now owns a well-stocked farm of 240 acres of land, with ninety acres under cultivation. He served in the Confederate army in the late (Civil) war, enlisting July 18, 1862, under Gen. Churchill, and participated in many of the principal battles of that war. He was captured at Arkansas Post, and carried to Chicago, where he remained for four months. He was exchanged at City Point, Va., then went to Tennessee, and joined the Tennessee army, and fell back with the army into Georgia, being detailed a cook, at the time of the Chickamauga battle. Again he was with the army, participated in the battles of Missionary Ridge, Resaca, Ga., and at Atlanta, was again captured at Jonesboro, Ga., and was carried to Nashville, Tenn., being just one month away from his command. After his exchange he went with the command on the raid into Tennessee one month after he was a prisoner at Nashville. He was with his command in the battle of Nashville, and fell back with the army and crossed the Tennessee River on Christmas day, 1864, the army falling back to Corinth, Miss. There he obtained a furlough and returned home, where he found nothing but his wife and one child. He soon resumed farming. Both Mr. and Mrs. Henderson are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, in which he serves as class-leader. Mr. Henderson has served as justice of the peace for eleven years, and as postmaster, at Brocktown, for twenty-four years. He is a good citizen, and is highly esteemed by all who know him."
He is listed in the 1900 Pike County AR Census in dwelling 32, Missouri Township. He is shown with his wife, Matilda J. (age 61) and two children: Flora A. (Nancy A., age 27) and James B. (James Tilden, age 23). Is James Tilden the same person listed in the 1880 Census as Samuel? (There is no James listed in 1880 and no Samuel listed in the 1900 Census.)
Abner is listed in the 1910 Pike County AR Census in dwelling 142, Missouri Township. He is shown with his wife, Tildy (Matilda, age 72), his single daughter Flora (Nancy Ann Flora, age 36) and Tom Alford, a grandson.
There is something amiss here. Nancy Ann Flora is listed as single living with her parents in every census since her birth yet in the 1910 Census she is shown as having one child and the child was still living. There is no mention in earlier Pike County Census data of this child or his father [the AAFA database indicates the father to be Samuel Thomas Alford]. Who is this Samuel Thomas Alford? Where and when was he born? Did he and Nancy have an illegitimate child named Tom? Abner Newton Henderson Jr appeared as head of household in the census enumerated January 22, 1920 at Pike County, AR. Information was found on Page 21B, sheet 9B, ED 93, Missouri Township, Dwelling 187, Family 192. Abner was shown at age 81 as a widowed white male, born in Alabama. His father was born in North Carolina. His mother was born in Alabama. Also shown was his daughter Flora at age 46, a single white female. He died on October 29, 1926 at Brocktown, Pike County, AR, at age 88. He was buried at Brocktown Cemetery, Pike County, AR. The following obituary was published in The Pike County Courier, Pike County, AR, on November 5, 1926:

Robert Olynthus Patterson was born 30 November 1855 in Talbot County, GA, a son of John Wright and Cornelia McMurray Patterson. John's parents were Robert (1759-1824) and Eleanor Wright Patterson; Robert's father was William Patterson, who was born in Ireland in 1743 and died in Georgia in 1801.
Robert 0., already having become well-read, left a destitute postwar Georgia at age twenty-one and worked in orange groves on the St. John's River in Florida. Six months later, having saved enough money to pay passage, he journeyed from Key West across the Gulf of Mexico and up the rivers to Camden. He walked to Arkadelphia and then back to his Uncle John Cheatham's house in Dobyville, a trip of four days. After working several years as a hired hand and farming a small place of his own nearby, he departed for Oklahoma to better his life.
Enroute, in Pike County, he found a homestead and was able to buy an adjoining claim with a house. Here he lived, and in 1886 married the Brockton postmaster's daughter, Alsie Henderson, born 5 September 1868. Soon children arrived. Robert 0. moved to Smithton to work in the huge sawmill. Shortly the mill went bankrupt, but he was able to get a job as a fireman on the Smithton-Pike City railroad. About 1897, he was able to buy 320 acres near Dobyville.
In 1903, the family moved to the Dobyville farm. Robert 0. Patterson soon expanded his holdings to 543 acres and had several tenant families on his place. He had one of the first dairies, and at the time of his death was buying and upgrading a herd of whiteface Herefords. He was also involved in community and school affairs, serving as a member of the school board.
Indicative of Robert Patterson's courage was his involvement in the 11926 vote on the Full Crew Law, which required an extra brakeman to be added to all trains entering and operating in Arkansas. Patterson, an ex-brakeman, did not believe the extra brakeman- was necessary. This position led to the union's advice to Gurdon merchants not to buy Patterson's produce, thereby depriving him of a market. He, in turn, wrote a letter to the Arkansas Democrat explaining his plight. A headline, Boycotting the Farmer, followed by an article naming the merchants involved, brought on a boycott of them by the union workers and resulted in Patterson being attacked by an irate merchant. The railroad office at St. Louis asked Patterson to speak at rallies, which he did. A full-page ad appeared in the paper with Patterson's stern-faced picture, his story, and testimonials by his friends. However, the efforts of this seventy-six year-old were in vain, as the law was not repealed for many years and the extra brakeman was not dropped until the 1980s.
Robert 0. Patterson died 28 July 1932; his wife, Alsie, died on 16 May 1959. Both are buried along with many descendants in the Dobyville Cemetery.
Robert and Alsie had ten children and five grandchildren at the time of his death: (1) Cornelia Alsie, born 10 December 1886, died 19 February 1979, married Garland Wilmot Ruth; (2) Hattie Saphronia, born 17 February 1888, died 11 February 1911; (3) Robert Henderson, born 8 April 1892, died 8 March 1992, married Alice Tidball, second Sarah Martha Patterson; (4) Bertha Elizabeth, born 16 May 1895, died 19 December 1978, married Dr. Frederick Loe; (5) Ruth Boyd, born 1 July 1897, died 8 March 1922; (6) James Olynthus, born 9 April 1899, died 13 August 1918; (7) Lucy Doris, born 13 August 1902; (8) Abner Wright, born 26 May 1904, died 28 February 1967, married Annie Pearl Terrell; (9) Donald Ian, born 28 June 1907, married Lennie May Dillard; and (10) Margaret Janet, born 29 April 1910, married Carl Nealus Baumgardner.

He enlisted on July 6, 1917 and served through May 31, 1919. he was awarded a good conduct medal on September 13, 1920 by which time he had earned the rank of Sergeant. Robert Henderson Patterson married Alice Tidball on June 2, 1920 at Washington County, AR. Robert Henderson Patterson and Alice Tidball were divorced; [According to Gail Lies, Alice was admitted to a state mental facility and Robert divorced her.]. Robert Henderson Patterson married Sarah Martha Patterson on April 8, 1928. [Sarah is a distant cousin from GA.].
He was the subject of the following sketch at Clark County: Past and Present; Wendy Richter Editor, pp 658-659,:
Robert Henderson Patterson was born in 1892 at Brockton, Pike County, AR. He was one of ten children born to Robert Olynthius and Alsie Henderson Patterson. Robert 0. was a son of John Wright and Cornelia McMurry Patterson. R. 0. originally moved to Clark County in the 1870s, went to Oklahoma for a time, and in 1903 the family moved back to their farm and resumed farming.
Robert H. was able to resume his schooling in a one-room structure, going three to four months in winter, and another few months in summer when the crops were laid by. In winter, a long walk, the cold, and crossing overflowed creeks waist deep made an education a painful affair.
Robert H. continued working for his father and was promised a colt and two years of school somewhere if he would stay on until he was twenty-one. He agreed and went to an Academy at Port Gibson, MS. His school day started at 4:00 A.M. with cows to milk, change clothes, go to class, and study until ten or eleven at night, seven days a week. Even with this schedule he was in line for the gold medal. In the middle of the second year he collapsed from exhaustion and returned home.
Fortunately for Robert, World War I had started, and when the corn was laid by in June, 1917, he joined the Marines---a waiver being necessary for his five-feet eleven inch 155-pound frame. The rigorous boot camp must have seemed a vacation to him. Afterward in Haiti, with no cooking experience, he was made mess sergeant, his predecessor having been caught misusing mess funds. Needless to say, not only was he a good Marine, he was an honest Marine; the mess fare improved markedly.
After the war was over Robert returned and in 1920 married Alice Tidball who was teaching at Dobyville. Moving to Hempstead County, they had two children, Robinette, born 1921, and Allen James, born in 1925. After a divorce, Robert married Sarah Patterson (1899-1978) and they resided in the Dobyville area where he farmed until retirement. A leader in community affairs he helped establish the Dobyville Cemetery Trust Fund. He compiled from memory and through research an outstanding history of his beloved Dobyville area, including occurrences such as the deep freeze of '99 and the flood of '05. His many newspaper articles and "Memoirs" have provided us a good picture of the waxing and waning of a small rural community. Would that each community had had a Robert H. Patterson.
Robert died in 1992 and was buried in Dobyville Cemetery, mourned by many friends. Always a gentleman, when once queried about space in the Cemetery, he replied: There are eight lots available, if you don't mind sleeping at my feet. Robert Henderson Patterson died on March 8, 1992 at Dobyville, Clark County, AR, at age 99. He was buried at Dobyville Cemetery, Dobyville, Clark County, AR.

[Bertha was a nurse in Talihina, Oklahoma in October when, as Miss Patterson she applied for a birth certificate from the State of Arkansas.]. Dr. Fred Loe died on December 19, 1965 at St. Joseph Hospital, Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, NM, at age 81. The following obituary was published after December 19, 1965:
Dr. Fred Loe died at St. Joseph Hospital Sunday afternoon at 1 o'clock, December 19, 1965, following a long illness. He was born May 13, 1884 in Mercer County, Missouri. The youngest of five children of Anderson and Sarah Loe. Dr. Loe was graduated by the College of Physicians and Surgeons (now Washington University) St. Louis Missouri, with the degree of M.D. 1908. Since that time ha has specialized in ophthalmology.
For many years, he was employed as the only physician on the White River Apache reservation, White River, Arizona. He visited his patients horseback, taking to them understanding of the White Man's medicine and its healing. He cared for all types of diseases, doing whatever needed to be done, often having to invent instruments and equipment from whatever was at hand in the primitive homes. (Winning the Indians over to the idea of taking the sick to the hospital was a slow, gradual process but his success in healing as well as his personality won them over. So well, in fact, that when he was transferred to Phoenix, later, the White Mountain Apache petitioned the Washington office to leave him at White River).
While working with the Indians he found that one of his major problems with them was Trachoma, a communicable disease of the eye which was not only painful but caused a diminution of visual acuity or blindness. He was privileged to work with Dr. Phillip Thygeson in isolating the causative agent of the disease.
Later, while on the Sioux Reservation at Rosebud, South Dakota, he was the first to cure trachoma by using sulfanilamide. This led him into the Indian Bureau's program for the Eradication of Trachoma among the American Indians. With headquarters at Minneapolis, he traveled from Indian boarding school to Indian boarding school, diagnosing and treating trachomatous eyes, keeping a careful record and returning at stated intervals in order to check and re-check the results of the treatment. The results were spectacularly successful. Within a matter of fourteen days, under treatment with sulfanilamide, the disease was cured and the patient free from pain, his vision improved and many times good vision was restored. it was like magic.
When Dr. Loe retired from the Government Service in 1946 he became director of State Heath Department of Nevada, holding that position until he resigned to open an office in ophthalmology at Gallup, in association with Dr. Vincent Accondi. About six years ago, finding his practice too great for his physical strength he closed his office and moved to Albuquerque hoping to take work at the University in electricity, and eventually to become a 'ham' radio operator, long an ambition of his. He was licensed in 1962 and became one of the earliest members of the 'Eye Bank', an organization of hams, going on the air at 7 a.m. every week-day morning to help find where corneas were needed and where they were available, reporting each time to the Eye Bank, here in Albuquerque. He enjoyed this work very much and the contacts thus made, until illness forced him to give it up, finally.
However, he never lost his interest in Sight Conservation work and many times expressed the hope that, instead of flowers his friends would contribute to the:
