Hughes died on September 11, 1923 at Venedocia, Van Wert County, OH, at age 69. Mr. David T. Hughes, Venedocia, O. [:TAB]by E. Roberts, a friend of David Hughes It was not unusual for the family of the deceased to ask me to write a word of remembrance for the brother whose name appears above. We were in close friendly contact as a member of our church during the 18 years that I was minister of the church in Venedocia, besides that we happen to come to America from the same area, Llandrillo in the Edeirnion valley North Wales. He wasn't a son of Llandrillo and didn't stay there long. He was actually from Llangwm and he spoke with delight of the old elder Cadwaldr Llwyd, Llanfihangel. No doubt this famous man left an impression on the mind and spirit of our brother, plus many others raised in that area. We believe that he was raised and nurtured by his grandfather and grandmother, Thomas and Ann Davies who lived near the main road to Corwen. He wasn't rich or worldly in his upbringing but he received something much more precious, his religious fervour which influenced his speech, his bearing and his entire world. It was interesting to note the comment in one of the letters from the children. "He was a refined gentleman and I was very proud of him." True religious fervour makes a gentleman, regardless of wealth or worldly knowledge. He was gentle, loving, humble, kind and always ready to help. He respected his fellow man, pure in his speech, his tastes and his life. His devout service ran like a constant silent river and it was this heritage that he left to his children. We hope that they never lose it. Here is a short outline of our brothers earthly journey. He was born April 6, 1854 and like many other boys in he circumstances in Wales he started early working for a local farmer. in time he went to work for Edward Davies Bryn Bwlan between Bala and Llandderfel. Another elder "of the old school" in the church where Tom Ellis was a member. At this time he met the one who became his bride, May 15, 1879. She was the sister of the well known bard, Dewi Hafesp. They came to live in Llandrillo and from there emigrated to the U.S.A. I had no significant contact with them in the beginning since I was only a boy, but I remember that he was perceived as some one special and had caught the attention of our leader, often called upon to lead in public prayer. When I met him in Venedocia, he showed me a book he had received when he first came to America, from our aunt, who was the widow of the Rev. John Williams, Tyn y coed (House in the trees), which proved to us that David was no ordinary boy, to have attracted her attention and admiration. The young pair landed in New York May 1st 1882 with two small children, Margaret A. and Robert W. They made their way to Venedocia O. Dec 19, 1884, after a few years of ill health the mother died and left our brother in dire straits with three orphaned children, the youngest barely a year old. The second time he married Miss Mary Ann Jones, the daughter of Mrs. Rowland Evans, Venedocia on June 10, 1891. She turned out to be God's gift to him. By labor, thrift and able management their circumstances improved until they were quite comfortable, having retired from the responsibilities of the farm to a comfortable house in Venedocia. From this marriage a son, John Eynon was born and at the present he holds an important position with Southern Bell Telephone Co. in St. Louis. He is a wonderful singer, one of the best tenors to be raised in musical circles in Venedocia. He has been a soloist in many churches and at present in the Tyler Presbyterian Church, one of the largest churches in St. Louis. I'll share a few words from his letter. "My music work consists chiefly or mixed and male quartette and solo work. I can say that I never sang in a movie theater in my life. It is strictly my policy to follow religious work only. I think this is due to my training etc", the influence of the religious community in Wales reaching to the third generation in St. Louis today. Once again the tempest struck our dear brother. On Jan 30, 1908 he lost his second wife, quite suddenly. Oct. 30, 1918 he married again, this time, Mrs. Jane Evans from the region of Sion in the settlement., the most virtuous woman that I ever met. The marriage was quite happy, filled with wisdom and religious fervour. This I felt when I stayed with them for a week in their comfortable house, twelve months last October, it was a delightful religious atmosphere. he didn't last long, Sept. 11, 1923 after a difficult illness of Bright's disease, his spirit flew to his God that gave him life. He was 69 yrs., 5 months and 5 days old. The memory of his nobility, friendship and faithful devotion will long be remembered. If all the members in our churches were like this brother, the Sabbath would be kept with respect for the fellowship, full prayer meetings and regular family involvement and commitment. The Bible and other religious books would be read more than any other and the church treasury would be overflowing. Ministers of the Word would be respected for their work. It is obvious from what's been said earlier that we were very good friends. However, when discussing the funeral, since our Minister is new to the church the widow suggested it best not to invite me to take the service, for fear of hurting the new minister's feelings. That heavenly lady showed her compassion even in her hour of grief. Just like David T. Hughes. His remains were laid to rest in the Venedocia cemetery beside his first wife to await the day that they meet their maker. See the names of his children: Mrs. W. R. Owen - Westernville, O, Robert - Lima, O., David - Farmington, Mo., John - St. Louis. All having made homes for themselves and following the religious way. God's blessings and support to all of them and the widow. |
