Mrs. Alford was born Feb. 19, 1919, in Nimrod, Ark. She was a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carlton Burnett Alford, and one grandson, Karl Alford. Survivors include one son, Wayne Alford of Atlanta; two daughters, Addie Surginer of Weatherford, Texas, and Carlotta Mayfield of Atlanta; one brother, James Kenneth Bennett of Weatherford; four sisters, Imogene Edmiston and Mary Elizabeth Peveler of Weatherford, Shirley Reed of Winthrop, Ark., and Floria Swinney of Longview, Texas; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a number of other relatives. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Westside Baptist Church with the Revs. Jim Howard and Gene Parker officiating. Burial will be in Laws Chapel Cemetery, Cass County, Texas, under direction of Hanner Funeral Service. " She was buried on August 28, 1999 at Laws Chapel Cemetery, Cass County, TX. |

The Funderburk family origin is in Germany. Part (there were two other brothers on another ship - they survived teh voyage) of the Von Der Burg family boarded a ship, The Golden Beaver at Hamburg, Germany to sail for America. Just as the voyage was almost complete the ship foundered and sank off the Carolina coast. All the Von Der Burg family, save Hans were lost. He was rescued and brought to Charleston, South Carolina. The name was changed from Von Der Burg becoming Funderburk, Funderberg, Funderburgh or Funderburg (and other variants). There he became an indentured servant (to pay the fare for the voyage?). Family legend has it that he ran away from this indentured servitude and headed North to Lancaster District, South Carolina. There he met and worked with Titus Laney, an Irish immigrant. Hans married Catherine Laney, the daughter of Titus Laney. From the birth places of his children it appears Hans moved his family several times. However, in the early 1800's some of the Funderburks began moving over into Chesterfield County, South Carolina. Hans Devauld Funderburk was born on December 11, 1724 at Schlossberg, Germany. [One source has the birth place as Leipzig.]. He was the son of John Michael Von Der Burg I. Hans Devauld Funderburk married Catherine Laney, daughter of Titus Laney and Hannah ______, circa 1755 at Rowan County, SC. Hans Devauld Funderburk appeared as head of household in the census enumerated 1800 at Lancaster County, SC. Devauld was listed (as Devalt) living with 1 male 10 to 16; 2 males 16 to 20; 1 male 20 to 45; 1 male over 45; 2 females 10 or younger; 2 females 10 to 16; 1 female over 45. He died in 1818. |
