"i have copy of death cert. on james mathew alford, borned jan. 9, 1834, died may 26, 1914 in hot springs, ark. it lists his parents as john and melinda (Lamascana) alford. buried at liberty cem. new hope, ark. t. emaline griffen was borned in tenn. 1837, they in ark by 1840. father wade griffen, on 1840 pike co. ark. census. she married james mathew alford in ark." This information supports the assumption that James Matthew is the son of John Alford. He was the son of David Alford and Mary Ann "Polly" Orrick. He was enumerated with David Alford on the Morgan County, AL census dated 1830; John was shown at age 19 as a white male. John N. Alford married Malinda Lucinda Lamascus on August 25, 1831 at Morgan County, AL. by D Ballew, JP (A-195). A John Nathaniel Alford purchased 39.04 Acres of land from the United Stated General Land Office on September 13, 1832 via Certificate 5168. This land is the Northeast 1/4 of the Northeast 1/4 of Section 8, Township 6S, Range 1W relative to the Huntsville Meridian. It is located in Morgan County, Alabama. [Could this land have been purchased by John N. the son of David? If so, it means he had established a home for himself in AL and might help explain why he and his family did not come to Pike County, AR at the same time as David, et.al.]. He was listed as a head of household on the Morgan County, AL census dated 1840. He was found in Northern District, 39th Reegiment, Page 30; John Alford 01001000001 01001, was shown at age 29 as a white male. Also shown was one unknown female child age 5-10 and a male age 800-90 living in the household. [Could this elder male be John's grandfather, Robert?]. John N.
