Eventually he had a new trial in Sulphur Springs [Texas] in the end of Aug./first of Sept.1903. This time he beat the rap but knowing the truth and fearing vengeance never again used his birth name. He is buried under the name of John Lee Copelin in The Redlick United Methodist Cem. Bowie Co., Tex. beside grandmother Alice Audna Alford Copelin, even his first born did not know the real name. He worked on a tinder for his own accord. He rented the house where he lived. He could read and write and he spoke English. He was married twice. The ages and birth dates given for Martha are consistent with what we know about Mattie and Mattie is a possible nickname for Martha.
