Eventually he had a new trial in Sulphur Springs [Texas] in the end of Aug./first of Sept.1903. This time he beat the rap but knowing the truth and fearing vengeance never again used his birth name. He is buried under the name of John Lee Copelin in The Redlick United Methodist Cem. Bowie Co., Tex. beside grandmother Alice Audna Alford Copelin, even his first born did not know the real name. My grandfather better educated then most and well read was none the less a very superstitious person." John Larkin "Bob" Copelin was born on March 27, 1867 at Mount Pleasant, Titus County, TX. He worked on a tinder for his own accord. He rented the house where he lived. He could read and write and he spoke English. He was married twice. The current marriage (at the time of the census) was for nine years. John Larkin "Bob" Copelin died in 1955 at Texarkana, Miller County, AR. [one source has the date as June 1959]. There is a Tom and Martha Williamson listed in the 1900 and 1910 Pike County AR Census. The ages and birth dates given for Martha are consistent with what we know about Mattie and Mattie is a possible nickname for Martha. Additional research (like finding the marriage record) needs to be done. Mattie L. Alford married Tom ______. Mattie L. Alford married George Williamson.
