John Balthasar was born in York County, Pensylvania about 1750. He left York County in 1764 with his father and siblings, moving to Rowan County, North Carolina. He went back to Pennsylvania in late 1779 when his step-grandmother died, probably to get his and his siblings' portion of the estate that was willed to them by his grandfather, Johann Balthasar upon the death of his widow, Anna Catherina. While in Pensylvania, John Balthasar served in the Revolutionary War. In Central Pennsylvania Genealogy Magazine, Sep 1968, - "Soldiers from Cumberland Valley in the Revolution' is listed "Balthasar Kinatzer, enlisted during the war, aged about 31 years, about 5 feet and 8 inches high, born in York County; last place of residence Roan (Rowan) County, North Carolina; can do a little at the schemaker trade, dark brown hair, dark complexion, of German extraction, 18th April 1782; bounty paid by Captain Bush." After the war, John Balthasar left Pennsylvania and went to Shenandoah County, VA where he appeared in the 1785 tax list. He remained in Shenandoah County at least until Nov 6, 1787 when he married Mary Pennicuff (Bennighoff), probably the daughter of Philip Pennicuff. John Balthasar returned to Davie County, North Carolina where his father was living then. He left there with his brother Nicholas who was in Sevier County, Tennessee by August 1789. John Balthasar was in Knox County, Tennessee by Apr 1, 1794 when he served as a Private in a detachment of infantry under the command of Ezekial Buchanan, Regiment of Washington District Militia, commanded by Landon Carter, which was mustered into service on Apr 1, 1794 at Knoxville for the protection of the frontiers southwest of the river Ohio against Indians. The Muster Roll lists him as Paulser Cornatzer and shows he was called into service on March 1, 1794 and discharged June 6, 1794. By 1804 John Balthasar had moved on to Wayne County, Kentucky where he is listed as Balsher Kenatzer in the tax records of that year as one white male over 21 years of age, owning one horse. He remained in Wayne County at least through 1814. The 1810 Wayne County, Kentucky census records Palser Kanatzer, age over 45, along with two males age 18-26 (ptobably Philip and John), one male age 0-10 (David?), two females age 10-20, and one female age 0-10. John Balthasar appears to have gone to Fentress County, Tennessee by 1815 with his sons. The 1820 Fentress County census records with Philip Conatser, John Balthasar's son, a male age 45+, and the 1830 census records a male age 80-90 living with Philip Conatser. This male is probably his father, John Balthasar. Johann Balthaser Knortzer III married Mary Pennicuff, daughter of Phillip Pennicuff, on November 6, 1787 at Shenandoah County, VA.
