Georg Christoph Knortzer was born on August 31, 1723 at Treschklingin, Bad Rappenau, Heilbronn, Baden, Germany.
He was the son of Johann Balthaser Knortzer I and Maria Dorothea Meyer.
Georg Christoph Knortzer married Anna Marcetha Upp, daughter of Jacob Upp I and Anna Catherina Lauer, at York, York County, PA.
Georg Christoph came to America with his father, brother, and two sisters in 1738. The family settled in York County, Pennsylvania and became members of Christ Lutheran Church in York. Georg Christoph married, first, Anna Marcretha Upp (Ob, Opp) around 1746 and had five children. Anna Marcretha died before 1758 when her father's will was written. Her father, Jacob Upp, made bequests "unto Nicholas, Andreas, Balsar, Anna Margeta, and Catherina, children of Christopher Knertzer my son-in-law" in his will, written May 10, 1758 and probated March 30, 1767 in York Co. Georg Christoph's father also named the five children in his will. Births and baptisms of four of these children are recorded in the baptismal register of Christ Lutheran Church. Georg Christoph married, second, Margareta Elizabetha. On 20 August 1764 Margareta Elizabetha granted a deed of divorce to Georg Christoph. The deed of divorce notes that Georg Christoph is "late of Newbury Township," since he had already left York Co. and moved to Rowan Co., NC, where he purchased 397 acres on Grant Creek, 10 July 1764. Georg Christoph's five children went to Rowan Co., NC with him. By October 1766 Georg Christoph had married, third, Eve Schmidt/Smith Adams, widow of John Adams. Eve was a widow with five children by 1762 and indications are that she and Georg Christoph were married in 1764. Eve was daughter of Peter Schmidt/Smith who died in Rowan Co. in 1769, leaving a will which named children of daughter Eve and her deceased husband John Adams; the will adds that Eve is, in 1767, the "wife of Christopher Knatzer." It appears that the name changed from Knortzer to Conatser during the lifetime of Georg. Georg Christoph Knortzer married Martha Elizabeth ______ at York, York County, PA. Georg Christoph Knortzer and Martha Elizabeth ______ were divorced on August 20, 1764 at York, York County, PA. Georg Christoph Knortzer married Eve Schmidt, daughter of Peter Schmidt, at Rowan County, NC. Georg Christoph Knortzer died in 1793 at Rutherford County, NC. [One source indicates he died in Germany but that is unlikely.]. His last name was also spelled Kanatser [Rowan County North Carolina Grantor Index and other county documents]. His last name was also spelled Knertzer [Rowan County North Carolina Deed]. His last name was also spelled Knatzer [Will of Peter Smith, father of Eve Schmidt and some Rowan County North Carolina documents]. |
Johann Balthaser Knortzer I was born in 1701 at Furfeld, Bad Rappenau, Heilbronn, Baden, Germany.
He was the son of Killian Knorzer and Anna Barbara ______.
Johann Balthaser Knortzer I married Maria Dorothea Meyer on May 25, 1722 at Treschklingin, Bad Rappenau, Heilbronn, Baden, Germany.
Johann Balthasar was a member of the Evangelical Pfarramt (protestent church) in Treschklingen. The Hauptstaatsarchiv in Stuttgart states that Treschklingen was in the district of Sinsheim until the Protestant Reformation. Presently Treschklingen is a part of Bad Rappenau, in the Kreis (county) Heilbronn, Baden, Germany, in the political boundaries of what was called the German Palatinate. Before 1806 Treschklingen was in the possession of the family of Gemmingen-Hornberg. Treschklingen is northwest of Heilbronn and about 30 miles southeast of Heidelberg. In the spring of 1738 Johann Balthasar, at age thirty-seven, and Maria Dorothea Knörtzer, age thirty-five, emigrated with four of their children to America. On 17 April 1738 an inventory of the property of Balthasar Knörtzer, including real estate, money, bedding, clothing, linens, tin articles, copper and bronze items, cabinets, barrels and kegs, farm equipment, wine, all kinds of kitchen equipment, cattle and other animals, and odds and ends, and debts, was made in Treschklingen in preparation for selling everything he could not take with him on his passage to America. He is listed on page 247 of Pennsylvania German Pioneers Volume 1: Arrivals in the Port of Philadelphia from 1727 to 1808 by Strassburger, Ralph Beaver; 1939; Reprint, Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1966; under the heading - "Palatines imported in the Ship Charming Nancey, Charles Stedman, Com[ande]r, from Rotterdam but last from Cowes in England. Qualified the 9th Day of Novem[be]r 1738". He is listed on page 248 of the above work under a heading of - "At the Court House of Philadelphia, November 9th 1738. Present: The Honourable George Thomas, Esqr, Lieutenant Governour. The Palatines whose Names are underwritten, imported in the Ship the Charming Nancy, Charles Stedman, Com[ande]r, from Rotterdam, but last from Cowes in England, did this day take and Subscribe the Oaths to the Government, viz., " Maria Dorothea Knörtzer died on board ship during the crossing, (Register of the Lutheran congregation of Strayers Union Church, Dover, York County, PA) Johann Balthasar Knortzer is one of the twenty-four founders of York Christ Lutheran Church, 29 South George Street, York, PA, founded in 1741. Church records include the marriages of two of his children and christenings of many of his grandchildren. Balthasar was one of several Germans naturalized in Philadelphia on September 25, 1751. About 1760 Baltzer and Catharina (Wolfe Grass) (his second wife) moved from their farmland into the town of York and took up residence there, remaining in York Town at least from 1762 until their deaths. They lived in a house built on lot No. 84 on the east side of Beaver Street, which he had bought in 1754. When Baltzer wrote his will, he left that house in Catharine's possession. Johann Balthasar Knörtzer appears to have been educated. He signed his name in German script to the ship list when he arrived at the port in Philadelphia and to his will in 1767. He became quiet well-to-do in the new world. By the time he wrote his will, at age sixty-six, he had already distributed more than three hundred pounds in the money of Great Britain among his four adult children and his step-son. Johann Balthaser Knortzer I married Maria Anna Catherina Wolff in 1739 at PA. Johann Balthaser Knortzer I died on August 15, 1757 at York, York County, PA. [One source has the date as 1789, another has it as 1869. One source says death was in Germany.]. His last name was also spelled Knorzer [it is unclear why the spelling was changed]. |
