William B. McConnell was born in November, 1817 at GA.
According to State Census records, William was born in Georgia in November, 1817. Very little is known about his early life, but he migrated to Alabama and acquired land there and begin to farm. This land was located in the area that first became a part of Russell County and then later became a part of Lee County. He remained a farmer there for the rest of his life. \--> There is a story that has been passed down through the family about three (some say two) McConnell brothers that lived in Scotland and wanted to come to America, but, did not have the money to pay for their passage. They decided to hire onto a ship as sailors to come to America and found that being a certain height was a requirement for the job. One of the brothers was too short to qualify and came up with a plan to make himself some shoes with built up soles to increase his height. By doing this, he was able to qualify for the job and the brothers came to America as sailors on a ship. \--> Some have thought that William was one of these brothers, but, others have thought that William's father was one of these brothers. No official records have been found to support either view. \--> William first married Mary Kent and after Mary died, he married her younger sister, Tabitha Olive Kent. He married Mary Kent on September 5, 1837 at Russell County, AL. William B. McConnell married Tabitha Olive Kent on November 13, 1846 at Columbus, Muscogee County, GA. William B. McConnell died in 1903 at Lee County, AL. |
