Louis Harrison Cantelou was born on May 19, 1841 at Upson County, GA. He was the son of Louis Marshall Cantelou and Epsey E. Bowden.      Louis was born into a family that was considered fairly wealthy at that time and the federal census records support that fact, showing that they owned a large amount of personal and real property. Louis enlisted as a confederate soldier in the American Civil War on September 17, 1861 at Hickory Grove, Alabama. He was assigned to Company A, 6th Alabama Infantry, CSA. He was wounded in the neck or collarbone and in his left foot during the war. His wounds were received at the Battle of Seven Pines, Virginia, and at the Battle of Cedar Run, Virginia. He was discharged from the army in April, 1865. In a story passed down through the family, Louis took his personal slave into the war with him to care for him and carry his rifle and other belongings for him when he was in the field. This same story relates how he was disinherited by his family when he married a poor country girl (Martha) instead of the class of girl his parents wanted him to marry. The federal census records seem to support this story since they show him owning no personal or real property after he was married to Martha. Even though he was well educated and was a school teacher, he spent most of his life after marrying Martha moving from place to place working in textile mills as a laboror. At one time, he taught at a Woman's College that was located at Oak Bowery, Chambers County, Alabama. Even though he was well educated, he never taught any of his children to read or write. He is buried at Rosemere Cemetery in Opelika, Lee County, Alabama. Louis Harrison Cantelou married Fannie H. Sanderson on March 17, 1865 at Montogomery County, AL. Louis Harrison Cantelou married Martha Louisa Cardwell, daughter of N. A. Cardwell and _____ ______, on August 25, 1874 at Bluff Spring Escambia, FL. Louis Harrison Cantelou died on November 11, 1911 at Chambers County, AL, at age 70.
