Jackson was shown at age 26 as a married white male born in North Carolina. He was listed as a farmer with real estate valued at $100. Nancy was shown at age 19 as a married white female born in North Carolina. Their children were all born in North Carolina. Son, Alexander (age 3) and daughter, Cecilia (age 1).
She died on September 29, 1879 at Randolph County, MO, at age 49.
She was buried at Clifton Hill Cemetery, Clifton Hill, Randolph County, MO.

Bruce Clifton's relatives. Uncle John Clark of Denver ?? Dan Clifton who worked at the saw mill for years." So need to track John Clifton in Denver CO through census. Sept. 17, 1909 - "John Clark of Denver, an uncle of B Clifton, with Mr. Marsh of Nebraska is doing some work on the Clifton business block." Sheryl McNeely Shaw and Robert B. Adaline 'Addie' Clark married Martin Messick on May 18, 1873 at Randolph County, MO.
In the 1880 census she is living with her father (he is listed as 'Andrew J.' Clark in Randolph County MO, Clifton Township. Addie is divorced and 21 years old (should be 22 or 23.). There are two Messick children living with them listed as grandchildren to her father, A J Clark: Willard Messick - male, 4 years, grandson - 'at grandfather's' born in MO, father born in KY, and mother born in NC. Minnie Messick - female, 5 years, 'grandson' - 'at grandfather's house' born in MO, father born in KY, and mother born in NC. Sheryl McNeely Shaw has a copy of this census. From the Clark Bible - there are listings for several 'Messex' family members: BIRTHS - Alexandria (possibly Alexander) - born Feb 18 1874 - this child is not on the 1880 census with Addeline and her father and could be dead perhaps. Belle Messex b Nov 19 1875 - probably Minnie Belle as Minnie is listed on the 1880 census and is 5 years old. Willard Messex - Feb 14 1877 - is on the 1880 census with Addie and grandfather, A J Clark. Under DEATHS: in the Clark Bible is Eled Messex - Sept. (no day or year given) - Could be the 4th child of Martin and Addie born in 1878 or 1879? Or the father of Martin? Or a sibbling? Adaline 'Addie' Clark and Martin Messick were divorced. Adaline 'Addie' Clark died on November 17, 1880 at age 23. She was buried at Clifton Hill Cemetery. [Along with her mother, Nancy Clark, and sister Jula M. Clark. Addie's tombstone is recorded as "Adaner MESSEX, Jan 30, 1857 - Nov. 17, 1880".]. |

She died at the age of 60 years - about 3 years after arriving in California from the Sweetwater area of Texas - had the Clark family Bible - passed down to her granddaughter, Geraldine Poteau - now in possession of Geraldine's granddaughter, Debbie Myers Bell. The First National Bank was chartered in 1904. He came to Claude in 1889. Does the S. in his name stand for Sidney? Tolman Cavins was the postmaster of Greenwood TX two times. [Need to get the exact dates.] The first one I [Sheryl] believe was after Cyrus W. Clifton who served a year or so starting in 1879. From Larry Wm. Sumpter's email on 11-4-98: "Cavens, Tolman -- aged about 15y, son of John T. Cavens, on 18 Nov 1873 thrown from a wagon, driving the team, horses took fright & throwing him off on his head, he is out of danger"; The Huntsville Herald at Huntsville, MO 20 Nov 1873. In the 1880 census of Wise County TX, Tolman Cavins, W M 25, is a boarder and single. His occupation is listed as a R______? Druggist, perhaps a relief druggist. He was born in MO. He is listed 230/230 with William Batdroff and his family and three other boarders. He was the son of John T. Cavins. Tolman S. Cavins married Fannie J. Clark, daughter of Andrew Jackson Clark and Nancy Henderson, on May 13, 1886 at Wise County, TX. Tolman S. Cavins died on August 23, 1925 at age 68. |

He succeeded to the presidency of the bank in 1925 when Tolman Cavins died. Bert was a Mason and a Trustee of the First Methodist Church of Claude. |

By 9 May 1880 the Randolph Co. MO census shows that they were divorced and Addie living with her father with her children. Note the Clark family Bible spells his last name 'Messex'. Wonder who got the children after Addie died. Need to research this. Need to look up a Willard Messick in the Social Security Death Benefits Records 1937-1993. |

W J also served in this unit with Merit Clifton and Merit's brothers, Minor and D B (Daniel Boone) Clifton. [Need to send for Civil War service records for these four men and check Missouri pension records for Minor and D B Clifton and W J Heflin.] Sheryl McNeely Shaw has copies of Merit and Anna Clark Clifton's (his widow) pension applications in Texas.
