John Brewer swore to the following affidavit on January 13th, 1840. Be it remembered that on the 13th day of January 1840 that John Brewer of the County of Pike in the State of Arkansas personally came before me the undersigned an acting Justice of the Peace within and for the County of Hempstead in the State of Arkansas and being by me duly sworn deposeth and says that in the year 1827 he cleared and improved about six acres upon a portion of the Public Lands of the United States upon a tract now known and designated as that portion of the South West fractional quarter of Section twelve in Township Eight South of Range twenty-six West in the District of Lands subject to sale at Washington Arkansas being South and East of the Little Missouri River and that he at that time and still does reside upon public lands in an adjoining unsurveyed Township. And he further states that that within the year 1833 he cultivated this same improvement then containing about ten acres in corn and that he had possession of the same on the nineteenth day of June 1834. And he further states he had cultivated resided and had possession of the same each and every year from the year 1827 until the present time and that he still continues to cultivate reside and have possession of the same until the present day and further says not. John (his x mark) Brewer Sworn to and subscribed before me this 13th January 1840. R.L. Phillips J.P. And at the same time and place John Hughes and Rice Stringer personally came before me and being duly sworn state on oath that they are personally well acquainted with the above named John Brewer and that they know the he cultivated the improvement on the tract in this above affidavit mentioned in the year 1833 and that he had possession of the same on the 19th day of June 1834 and indeed that they know that he has resided occupied and cultivated the same each year from the year 1827 until the present time and that he still cultivates resides & has possession of the same and generally that they know all the material facts stated in his above affidavit to be true in substance and in fact and further say not. Oliver Brewer Jr. died in Hempstead County, Arkansas on April 29, 1832. That part of Hempstead later became part of Pike County, Arkansas. His widow, Elizabeth Brewer, continued to have children after his death. Archibald Yell Brewer was the son of Henry Brewer, a brother of Oliver Brewer Jr. [according to Mrs. Henry Taylor Brewer (nee Emily Caroline Carter) and daughter-in-law of Henry Brewer]. Grandison Delaney Royston Brewer age twelve has the surname McDonald in the 1860 Pike County, Arkansas census. Elizabeth continued to have children at least until July 24, 1860. And it appears all of the children born after Oliver's death were born outside a marriage bond. With the exception of Archibald Yell the fathers of the children are unknown.
