He was schooled in Arkansas in general studies and law, and then moved to Indian territory in 1844. At the time of Oklahoma statehood, he was elected Senator from the Leflore-Eatimer District and was re-elected to each legislature since the first, so that it was his usual privilege to vote yes or no on every law now (1914) on the statutes of State of Oklahoma. Edwin T. Sorrells, son of George Washington Sorrells, after the civil war, in which his father, a confederate soldier, secured his school and law education in Arkansas before moving to Indian Territory in 1844, while he was still very young. It was a matter of strict pioneering for the Sorrells family. Edwin was the first to make a clearing, and with tree boughs formed a shelter where the first Sunday school and church were ever conducted in that part of the Territory. Later, he aided in building the first Church and school house ever built in that section for white people. He formed the first Democratic Club in the Indian Territory, and in 1884 he organized the first Farmers Union. He was an early member of the A.H.T.A., twice holding the office of president. In 1914, many of the citizens of Eastern Oklahoma met at the court house at Wilburton, and passed resolutions endorsing the candidacy of Senator Sorrells for the office of Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma, he was nominated, but was defeated in the primaries.
