Joel met and married Mary Holdt (later Holt) while he was teaching school in Pennsylvania [Amelia County, Virginia Marriages]. The Holdt family were Pennsylvania Dutch stock. Joel sold his Amelia County land in 1820. Daughter, Harriet Ann was born August 22, 1821 in South Carolina indicating the family had arrived in that area around 1821. In information from Harry Creighton League, III - Joel League and William A. Stokes appear to have come from Amelia County, Virginia at about the same time, around 1820. Both families settled in Greenville District near Simpsonville, South Carolina. Joel League married Mary Holdt in May, 1809 at Amelia County, VA. [Amelia County, VA - Early Marriage Bonds; William and Mary College Quarterly, Volume 16, Number 3] Joel League died on July 1, 1857 at Greenville County, SC, at age 73. He was buried at Clear Spring Baptist Church Cemetery, Greenville County, SC.
