Louis, a native of Paris, France, for the love of liberty, volunteered his services and was appointed Capt. of a grenedier Company. He accompanied Marshal Count Rochambeau to America and landed at Rhode Island. They then joined the Continental Troops under General George Washington and marched through the different states viz: Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, and to Virginia where they met Lord Cornwallis at Little York and conquered him after severe action. Washington gave the command of the American armies to Layfayette, and Hamilton, the French General, gave the French division to Baron Viomel to attack the different entrenchments of the British. At the outset of the action, the two divisions rushed fearlessly though they received a tremendous shower of grape, cannon, musket balls, and bomb shells. They never wavered for a moment, but, rushed on and captured the entrenchments, which led to surrend er. Capt. Louis Cantelou received some 7 or 8 bayonet wounds and at the close of the action was seriously injured by the bursting of a bombshell fired by the enemy. At the close of the war, which took place shortly afterwards, the French troops embarked for the West Indies. In consequence of the wounds Capt. Cantelou had received, he remained in Virginia until he recovered. A year or two afterwards, he married Alice Crymes by whom he had 5 children. In 1797, they moved to Augusta, Georgia, and there resided until his children were grown. He then moved to his plantation in Edgefield, South Carolina (known as Martintown) (the Lawrence Miller Place) and lived there until his death in 1818.
