Burrell and family were listed in dwelling 468 as family 474 in the 1860 Jasper County, Georgia Census in the Monticello Division on page 295 (reel number M653-128); enumerated August 27, 1860 by Wm. S. Williams. Burrell P. was shown at age 62 as a farmer, head of household with personal property valued at $11,000 and real property valued at $19,500. He was shown as a married white male born in Georgia. Temperance was shown at age 55 as a married white female born in Georgia. Their children (all born in Georgia): William H. (Wm. H.) was shown at age 21 as a single white male; Caleb W. was shown at age 19 as a single white male; Marquis DeLafayette (Marcus D.) was shown at age 16 as a single white male; Sarah C. was shown at age 12 as a single white female. Also living in the house was James Conly, a single white male, age 23, a doctor. Burrell Peebles Key died on August 30, 1872 at Mechanicsville, Jasper County, GA, at age 74. Burrell P. and his family are the subjects of this biographical sketch on page 481 of Biographical Souvenir of the States of Georgia and Florida. "Burwell P. Key was the father of John C. Key. He was born in Greene County, and was taken when a lad in his teens to Jasper County, where he was mainly reared and where he spent his life. He was a farmer, mechanic and mill owner, and was generally prosperous, and was greatly esteemed for his kindness of heart and benevolent disposition. He died in August, 1872. The mother of John C. Key was Temperance Brooks, daughter of Micajah Brooks, of Warren County, Georgia. He bore the distinction of having been a gallant soldier in the Revolution and an Indian fighter and pioneer and settler of Middle Georgia. He died at the great age of one hundred and two. "To Burwell P. and Temperance Key were born eleven children, namely : Amanda, Mary, John C., Thomas, Micajah, Jane Z., Judith W., Sarah, William, Caleb W. and Lafayette." |
