" William and Nancy were married in Bledsoe County, TN in 1829 and soon thereafter moved to Indiana. A short time later they returned to Bledsoe County, and in 1857 they moved to Pike County, AR then a year later to Hempstead County. They settled on a farm near Bingen. William is buried at Ozan Cemetery, Bingen, AR. William was justice of the peace for a few years and deputy county clerk of Bledsoe County, TN before moving to AR." William is enumerated in 1830 East Tenn Census, 1840 & 1850 Tenn Census, Bledsoe County and in the 1880 AR census, Hempstead County. In the 1880 census his mother, Patience, was living with him and he is listed as a bootmaker/cobbler. William Bryant married Harriet Saltzberry Kelsey on May 24, 1871 at Bingen, Hempsted County, AR. William Bryant died on May 22, 1883 at Bingen, Hempsted County, AR, at age 74. |

He was the subject of the following sketch at The Goodspeed Biographical and Historical Memoirs of Central Arkansas, Hempstead County,: "George was the 6th child in a family of 6 sons and 2 daughters. The marriage to Zerelda produced 2 sons and 2 daughters. In 1862, George joined Company I, 19th Arkansas Infantry, CSA, but was captured at Arkansas Post and taken to Camp Douglas, Chicago and kept prisoner for five months. He was then taken to City Point, VA. exchanged and remained in the same regiment taking part in the engagements at Chickamanga, Ringgold Gap, Resaca, New Hope Church, Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta, Jonesboro, Spring Hill and many skirmishes. A brother, J.R. Bryant, was killed at New Hope Church having served in one company from the commencement of the war. After he returned home, he clerked in Nashville from 1869 to 1872, is a Democrat though raised a Whig, was a member of the A. F. & A. M. and Pleasant Valley Lodge No. 80." George was enumerated in the 1880 AR census, Hempstead County. |
