Barnes was taken sick on the battle field of Suffolk, Virginia in May 1862 and was afterwards put on detached service at the camps of instruction and convalescence ... that he well remembers Joe Parsons the soldier above named, that they were reared up boys together in the same neighborhood in Cherokee County, Alabama and that he did not desert the service'."
