History of Caps District --- Independent The name "Caps," given to this district, is of uncertain origin. The story is told, however, that at one time, when a name for the district and the school was being discussed, one man, evidently tired of the discussion, threw his cap into the air and said: "Call it Caps." And Caps it is today. What is now a good part of the District was organized by the Commisioners' Court in 1891 as District Twelve. By subscriptions a small one-room building was erected, the prospective patrons doing most of the work. The first teachers were Misses Lillie Julian and Bertha Cannon. In a short time the need was felt of another room and a third teacher; these were added. In 1893 a part of the district was used in the formation of the Pleasant Hill District then called "Little Elm"-Number Twenty-three. Soon afterwards the country settled up sufficiently that another room and teacher were needed and added. In 1904 the district became independent and was compelled to reduce its size. Then Cross Roads District (Number Thirty-seven) was organized chiefly from the strip taken off at the northwest; in 1906 the district took another step and in incorporated for school purposes. By 1912 the house, with its frequent additions, was found to he so poorly arranged that bonds were voted for a new building and taxes increased for the maintenance of a better school. The present building was erected on a new and better located site; it is a two-story frame structure with six class-rooms, a hall, laboratory, and an auditorium, For several years after this improvement was made the growth of the district was rapid and for one year five teachers were found necessary. The number came back to four the following year, however, and here it has remained, although our district has constantly grown and improved. In 1916, the district increased its taxes to fifty cents and became eligible to receive State Aid. Much assistance has come from this source. The present-voted tax rate for Caps is seventy-five cents. Many improvements have been made during the last few years. Particular mention should be made of the splendid. playground equipment added this year, which is a source of pleasure and pride to all. The work has been very effectively done this year under the direction of W. H. Franks, Misses Della Landers and Dail Booth, and Mrs. Ruby Parmelly. The people of Caps community are very proud of their school and it is only natural that they should be for it is one of Taylor County's best rural schools. BLANCHE QUATTLEBAUM.
