He was the subject of the following sketch at Clark County: Past and Present; Wendy Richter Editor, pp 328-329,: Silas Preston Baumgardner was born 18 January 1876 in Lee County, VA He was the sixth child of John Alfred and Margaret Elizabeth Leddington Baumgardner. Margaret was a daughter of Solomon Leddington. She died 5 July 1935 and was buried in South Fork Cemetery. Silas's father, John Alfred, died when Silas was twelve. The family had a hard life on the rocky mountain farm. Around 1897, Silas married Caledonia "Callie" Elizabeth McQueen, who was born 3 October 1882. Callie had also had an arduous life living in a foster home and working for a living after age five. About 1903, Silas, his wife, their three small girls, and his mother left their Virginia home. They were accompanied by a number of relatives and neighbors who had moved by train to near Greenville, TX. In 1906, the Baumgardner family moved by covered wagon to Wayne, Indian Territory, Oklahoma. They lived in a tent for a year or so, but Callie was afraid of the Indians. One day the baby, Carl, kicked himself off of the spring wagon seat that served as his cradle; he landed under the seat. Until Callie found him she was certain that he had been kidnapped by Indians. In the fall of 1907, the Baumgardners moved to Omaha, NE, where Silas worked at farming, at laying a railroad track, and at anything to make a living for his family. One day the four young children were playing in a drainage canal when the water was turned on. They barely got out with little Carl in tow. After a year in Omaha, the family returned to Texas, where they remained until 1918. They then moved to Clark County, where they bought land from Ira Cobb in the South Fork community, Missouri Township. The Baumgardners united with the South Fork Baptist Church and the community. Mr. Baumgardner was, for many years, a director of the Vandiver School. As a farmer, he sold hay, cattle, vegetables, and fruit. On 1 February 1929, Callie died and was buried in South Fork Cemetery.
