George was a Civil War Veteran, brother of Josiah Sorrells Stafford. According to pension papers in the possession of Mary Louise Stafford Bates, George Franklin Stafford enlisted at 33 years old in Co D 17th Miss Reg in 1862 under Capt. Cochran with the 'Rough and Readies' in what is now Lee County, MS. Muster rolls state that he was wounded in action at Knoxville in 1863. In his effort to be reassigned to extra duties, he tried his hand as a shoemaker in Richmond, VA in December 1862 but was returned to infantry after only 6 days. After being captured in Berryville, VA on September 04, 1864, Pvt. George F. Stafford was released from prison in Camp Chase Ohio on June 11, 1865 without being provided a horse, money or gun. He is said to have walked past his children, who did not recognize their own father, who were even afraid of his appearance thinking he could bring harm to them. They had been taught not to speak to strangers. The family stories say that George was never the same man after the war experience. His first wife, Lethe, died 3 weeks after George returned from the war. George then married Lethe's sister, Sarah or Sallie, to care for his children and she was a gggrandmother to Mary Louise Stafford Bates. |
