Preemption Proof
State of Arkansas,
County of Hempstead,
United States of America.
Be it remembered, that on the 6th day of January, 1840, John Dickson, of the
county of Pike and State aforesaid, personally appeared before me, the
undersigned, an acting Justice of the Peace within and for the county
aforesaid, and on his oath, deposes and says, that, he is about forty-two
years of age, the head of a family consisting of a wife and seven children.
That in the year 1833, he cultivated a tract of the public lands of the
United States, to wit, a portion of the northwest quarter of section
thirteen in Township Eight, South of Range Twenty-six, West, in the district
of lands subject to sale at Washington, Arkansas. That he had in cultivation
on said tract in said year, about ten acres, which was planted in corn, that
there was thereon, a dwelling house and outhouses; and that he was in
possession thereof, and an occupant thereon, on the 19th. day of June, 1834
and still has possession and occupancy, thereof, and cultivates the same at
this time, and further says not.

Asa Thompson & Abijah Davis personally appeared before me, the undersigned,
an acting Justice of the Peace, within and for the county aforesaid, and on
their oaths, depose & say, that, they are personally acquainted with John
Dickson, who subscribed the foregoing affidavit and that they know the
matters & things by him sworn to therein, to be true in substance and fact,
and further, they say not.
