Preemption Proof
State of Arkansas,
County of Hempstead,
Be it remembered, that on the twentieth day of May in the year 1839,
Clement Davis of Pike County in the State of Arkansas personally came before
me, the undersigned, a Justice of the Peace within and for the County of
Hempstead in the State, aforesaid, at Washington in the County of Hempstead,
aforesaid, in the presence of the Register and Receiver of the Land office
at Washington, Arkansas and being duly sworn, states on his oath:
That, he is over twenty one years of age, to wit, about twenty six years of
age, a married man, the head of a family consisting of his wife and one
child; that in the year Eighteen hundred and thirty three he cultivated a
portion of the Lands of the United States in a then unsurveyed Township, and
that the Township was surveyed in the year 1837 and said improvement was
found to be upon the North East quarter of Section seventeen in Township
Eight South of Range twenty five west in the District of Lands subject to
sale at Washington, Arkansas, and that in said year he cultivated on said
tract, about eighteen acres, principally in corn and that he resided on said
tract and had possession of the same on the nineteenth day of June, Eighteen
hundred and thirty four and that he still resides on, has possession of, and
cultivates the same.

And at the same time and place and in the presence as within named,
personally came John Hughes, James Hughes and S.B. Dickson, and being duly
sworn state on oath, that, they are personally well acquainted with the
within named Clement Davis and that they know the material matters stated
and set forth in the within affidavit to be true in substance and in fact; &
that he did cultivate about Eighteen acres on the tract in his affidavit
mentioned and that he resided upon said tract and had possession of the same
on the nineteenth day of June 1834; and that he still resides upon, has
possession of, and cultivates the same.
