Sir:
Replying to your letter of February 1, 1907, you are advised that if your
children claim only through you to be Eastern Cherokees, they should not
file applications as you already have an application on file in this Office.
However, if their deceased mother was also an Eastern Cherokee and on the
Rolls of 1851, or a legal representative of some one who was so enrolled
with the Eastern Cherokees at that time, they should file applications
claiming through her.
Very respectfully,
Chief Clerk.

Andrew J. Alford,
Crowder City, Okla.
Sir:
Relative to your application filed in this office for share of money
appropriated for the Eastern Cherokee Indians, will say that the name of
your mother, Nancy Alford, does ot appear upon the roll of 1851. Neither
do the names of William Arrick (sp) and Cela Arrick (sp) appear upon the
rolls of 1835 or 1851. Do you know of any reason why your mother and her
parents were not enrolled in 1851? Can you furnish this office with the
names of your mother's great grandfather and great grandmother? Where
were said grandparents of your mother living in 1835? If in the west, when
did they move there? Was your mother Nancy Alford, a full-blood Cherokee
Indian, or to what race did she belong?
An early reply will be appreciated.
Very respectfully,
Special Commissioner.

Dr. Sir: Replying to yours of Nov. 27/07 will say I can remember that the
names of my great mother & her parents (mother) names were sent in for
enrollment about 1851. I do not remember the names of my Great Grand Father
& great grand mother only that their name was Strickland. Said Grand parents
of my mother were moved from Ala. to Ark. sometime near the year 1835. My
mother Nancy Alford was or claimed to be only 1/8 Cherokee Indian. Yours
