William Jackson Orrick. Wm. J. Orrick was born 27 March 1818 in South
Carolina. He is believed to be the son of Wm. & Cealy Orrick who lived in
Pike Co., Arkansas. He came to Arkansas as a young man with his family. The
route of (their) migration and the place of first settlement are not known.
The Orrick family is found in Crawford Co., Ark. as early as 1830, however
the relationship of Wm. J. and these early settlers has not been
established. The first definite record we have of Wm. J. Orrick is the
Texas land grant entry of 1837. He apparently was living at home as both
his brother A.B. & his (supposed) father William made application at the
same place, Harrison Co., Texas. Wm. J. (Orrick) married about 1840
although no record of (the) (date) & place has been found. His wife was
Rebecca Dyer, who came to Crawford Co., Ark. about 1836 with her family
from N.C. Family tradition says that he met his future wife somewhere on
the journey to Arkansas. According to the 1850 Census the first child,
Martha, was born in La. about 1841. The second child, Nancy, was born in
Ark. in 1844. Perhaps they were on their way to Texas (1841) and changed
their minds. Wm. J. is found on (the) Pike Co., Ark. tax list in 1842. In
1847 he bought gov. land in Crawford Co., and so far as is known, lived on
this place for the rest of his life. He is first shown on (the) Crawford
Co. tax roll in 1849. The only known occasion when he left home was in 1878
when he visited his son, Marion, who was working for his Uncle Ephraim in
Fort Worth. While in F.W. he sold his 3rd Class headright for which he
(applied for) in Harrison Co. in 1837. The transaction is recorded in
Tarrant County Deed Book H, page 407. Wm. J. (Orrick) is known to have
fathered nine children, the youngest of whom, John Wesley, lived until
1928. Wm. J. & his wife and some of their children are buried in the Vaught
Cemetery off Hwy. 71 near Winslow in Crawford Co. He died in 1893. Few of
his descendants still live in Arkansas, but are scattered from Texas to
California. L.S. (Stan) Orrick, Fort Worth Texas (13 July 1984).
