... to return to the early route now called the "Danville road" running
southwest from Decatur, the prong which forked southward at Neel ran to
what was then known as Houston's Store and this route is shown on the early
maps. Houston's Store was the first name for the post office at what was
later called "Danville" ... and it is worth noting that David Alford's
place is shown on this road on the La Tourette map (1837) ... The Alford
place was located about three miles east of present Stroup's Crossroads ...

Walter N. Vernon, Nashville, Tenn. 10-30-78. It was good to hear from you
today regarding your efforts to get data regarding early preachers in
Arkansas. My "Methodism in Arkansas 1816-1976" lists a W. Sorrels and this
must have been your George Washington Sorrels. He came in, in 1834, but
decided the next year not to continue as a full-time pastor, but
undoubtedly kept up his preaching on the side ... My list shows a M.E.
Alford that was probably your Madison Ewing Alford. He was evidently in
the Methodist Protestant Church and died in 1876. The Methodist Protestant
records are rather sparse, and Hendrix College has only a few ... Walter
N. Vernon. Correspondence with David Kelley, October 30, 1978.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mrs. John Warnick, Bridwell Library, Southern Methodist University ...
Methodism in Pike county, Arkansas can be traced to the year 1819 when
Rev. George Washington Sorrels (then of Ouachita Parish, Louisiana)
preached a sermon between Murfreesboro and Delight, Arkansas. He (later)
became Pike county's first Judge in 1834 and according to Dr. Walter N.
Vernon ... (in official capacity), "He came in, in 1834, but decided the
next year not to continue as a full-time pastor, but undoubtedly kept up
his preaching on the side." About 1836, Rev. Sorrels moved to Waldron in
Scott county and as late as 1850, according to the Census ... reported his
occupation as "local preacher". In ... (the) "Centennial History of
Arkansas Methodism" ... (James A. Anderson), it says, "while Dr. Biggs,
another local minister of great ability became a power in Howard, Hempstead
and adjoining counties ... Rev. G.W. Sorrels, also a local preacher,
pioneered the way in Scott and Sebastian counties. Living seventy-five
miles from the nearest church, Sorrels organized one in his house and
reported it to the nearest pastor." The second Methodist minister in Pike
county was Rev. Jesse Jenkins who came to Murfreesboro in 1837 from Jackson
county, Alabama. He removed to Ouachita county, Arkansas in 1844 and later
to Louisiana ... The third Methodist minister in Pike county was Rev.
Madison Ewing Alford who removed from ... Alabama to Arkansas ... (and) to
Texas where he served in the Mexican War and permanently located in Pike
county, Arkansas in 1841. In that year he with Rev. Jesse Jenkins organized
the first Methodist Church at Murfreesboro. He remained in Pike County ...
where he died (in) 1876. David Kelley letter to Mrs. John Warnick, November
13, 1978.

Tuscaloosa, Ala., Mar. 15, 1979 ... I suppose you have searched (the) 1850
Census, Pike Co. Ark. M.E. Alford is there & next door a young D.W. Alford.
Also Wm. Orrick, 66, & wife & T.L. Orrick, 21, & family & Rebecca Orrick,
34. Wm. Orrick was in (the) 1830 Census, Jackson Co., Ala. Goodspeed's
Southern Ark. (1890) has a sketch of Madison E. Alford, p. 314, says Wm. D.
was (the) eldest of 12 children. 3 Orrick families were in (the) 1830
Census, Jackson Co., Wm. Asa & James, but I don't see any in Morgan, either
Census or Court records. Morgan Co., Ala. Marriage record A, page 200,
Abner Henderson to Levisa Alford, Dec. 23, 1831 (executed 28th) by Joseph
Sandlin, same book p. 400, Joseph (McMenas) to Nancy Alford, 26 July 1841
(26th) by Thos. Jones, J.P. There were ... no McMenas ... in Morgan Co. ...
In Lauderdale Co., Ala. one Jane Orrick married E.H. McLemore, 28 Feb 1832.
I have marriages (early) for all Ala. counties whose records exist & I
don't have Madison E. Alford's to Nancy Orrick. They were probably married
in Jackson Co. as that is where her father lived in 1830 & the Jackson Co.
Court House burned. The existing marriages begin in 1851 ... Madison Co.,
