John Finley Crowe Manuscript
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
Having been solicited by my sons to give them some information of my
parentage and relatives, I have concluded to devote a portion, of the
leisure of a long vacation in college duties, to that subject. I know but
little of your mother's family. Her father, John Alexander ... emigrated to
Pennsylvania where he married. He had (five) children by his first wife,
his second wife was Mary Price ... Until the death of Mr. Alexander about
the year 1800, they lived in Lincoln county, (North Carolina). He left a
family of four sons and six daughters. The sons were Alexander, John, James
and Reese, the daughters, Violet, Jane, Elizabeth, Ann, Esther and Elvira.
In 1808 Mrs. Alexander's family joined a Presbyterian colony from Dr.
Hall's congregation in Lincoln and Iredell counties to Bellevue, Missouri.
Shortly after their settlement in Bellevue, Alexander and John married Mary
and Catharine McCormack (McCormick) daughters of another widow lady
belonging to the colony. They both subsequently became Ruling Elders in the
church of Caledonia, raised large families, and some six or eight years ago
were both called to their reward. James and Reese both married in Bellevue
and afterward moved to Arkansas. Some fifteen years ago they both died.
James left a family of (thirteen) children, and Reese, two daughters.
Violet the eldest daughter never married. She lived in her brother James'
family and died some years before him. Jane married Jason Frizell in
Bellevue, and after some years residence there, they moved to Northwestern
part of the State of Missouri. We have not heard from them for more than
twenty years. Elizabeth married William Hunt. They settled in Bellevue
where she died several years ago leaving a family of children. I know not
how many. Ann married John Henry in North Carolina. They first moved to
Bellevue and afterwards to Arkansas. Brother Henry was a man of ardent
piety and was licensed as a preacher in the Methodist Church and although
he continued to labor as a local preacher he seemed to be extensively
useful. He probably is still living in Hempstead County, Arkansas. His
eldest son John was also a preacher in the same connection, a young man of
great promise, but he died young. His mother (Ann) also died a
comparatively young woman leaving five or six children. Elvira the youngest
child married John Brewer in Bellevue and shortly after their marriage they
moved to Arkansas where they are probably still living. When I visited the
family in 1839 (in Pike County, Arkansas) they had six or seven children.
Since which time we have not heard from them. Source: The Crowe Family,

College, Hanover, Indiana. Manuscript written about 1855; Hanover College,
