Hi Dave

I am having a little problem with your Family Group Record 0010. What I
need is for you to set me straight on the two Marriages.

Married Abt 1841 TO WHICH PERSON Elizabeth (Fitzgerald) Humphries
(Humphreys) or Elizabeth Sherfield (Sheffield-Shurfield) Place: Pike
County, Ark.

Married Abt 1819 TO WHOM ? Place: Hempstead County, Ark. I see two spouse
listed. One is Elizabeth (Fitzgerald) and the other is Brinley.

I have been looking for Giles Kelley and I see you have been to some of the
same Genealogy Sites i have. It looks as if Giles may of been in Virginia
and had some brothers and sisters as I see where a person that could of
been his father was in Virginia.

Don Kelley

Hi Don

On the family group records the first marriage entry is for the husband
and wife of that group record. Any other marriages listed afterwards
with the husband are his additional marriages and any marriages listed
with the wife are her additional marriages.

Elijah Kelley married first Elizabeth Fitzgerald about or in 1819 in
Hempstead County, Arkansas. Elizabeth's husband John Humphries went into
Texas-Mexico in 1818 but died not long afterward. His estate was
administered in Hempstead County, Arkansas by Nathaniel Robbins. His heirs
were later receivers of land from the Texas Land Commission provisioned
through John Humphries' headright. Your great grandfather's brothers and
sisters had an interest because of their mother Elizabeth as the former
wife of John Humphries.

Elijah Kelley's second wife Elizabeth Sherfield was previously married
to a Brinley according to Sarah Jane (Kelley) Lamb in her 1937 letter. It
is possible she was married to a Mathias Brinley whose name appears on the
early Pike County, Arkansas tax lists but disappears after 1839. He is not
enumerated as a head of family in the 1840 Pike County census.

Our connection to the Brunswick County, Virginia Kelley's of St. Andrews
Parish is not established. The best scenario is this: Giles Kelley, Sr.
of Brunswick County, Virginia; his son James Kelley wife Rebecca; their
son Giles Kelley. There are deed records in Chatham County, North Carolina
1781-1792 of a Giles Kelley, and James & Rebecca Kelley "of Brunswick
County, Virginia". There is a Giles Kelley appearing in Jefferson County,
Tennessee 1796-1797. Giles Kelley of Chatham County, North Carolina sold
his land in 1792 and the timing is excellent for his moving and the
appearance of the Giles Kelley of Jefferson County and our Giles Kelley in
Tennessee. A realistic possibility this is one and the same Giles Kelley
and our ancestor.

Our Giles Kelley is in Tennessee in 1794 where his son William Kelley is
born and in Jackson County, Tennessee where Elijah Kelley is born then to
Illinois in 1804 and Arkansas 1815.

It has been a challenge to reach a breakthrough on our Kelley family
genealogy. There must be records some place that would provide the link to
take our line of family from Giles Kelley and beyond. It amazes me with the
large number of children of William and Elijah Kelley, their descendants,
that more information has not come to light. Perhaps with some of the new
Kelley researchers like you discoveries will be made.

David
