First I want to say excellent job! I've only been searching about a month
but have found nothing I didn't already know but Dixon H. and Minnie
Kelley's marriage date. And that's out of about 150 web sites. I do have
some info for you. You only have 4 children listed but they had 5. Robert
J. and Alma A. you have. The others are:
Warren A. Kelley born April 10, 1901 and died in February, 1975.
Glen Leonard Kelley born May 13, 1903 in Shawmut, AR and died on February
14, 1986 in the Emergency Room of Arkadelphia's Hospital, but was living in
Bismarck, AR. He is buried at Gaston Cemetary in Montgomery County. Just
west of Mt.Ida. He married Hellen Marie Gaston and they had 3 children:
Fern Kelley Serrano (living) who lives in Stockton, Cal., Glen Leonard
Kelley, Jr. (my dad) was born on November 5, 1927 in Shawmut and died
October 22, 1999 in Hot Springs, but was living in Pearcy, Ar. He is also
buried at Gaston Cemetary. Charles Hertbert Kelley (living) was born on May
23, 1940.
Wimburn (listed in most places as Winburn, but it was Wimburn) Kelley was
born on November 1, 1905 in Shawmut and died in a car accident out of state
in March of 1986. He was married to Pearl. They are both buried in Gaston
Cemetary. They never had any children. I am pretty sure he was retired from
the military.
Don't know if all is useful to you but wanted to add all I could since you
gave me my family history in less than 10 minutes.
Thank You VERY much.
P.S. I notice that Alma's info was marked private, Does that mean she's
living? Would really like to know because all that's left of our line
(that I know of) is me, my brother, my sister, an uncle and 2 cousins.
Thank you again,
Deborah L. Kelley

Hi Deborah,
Thanks for the nice words. I'm glad you found the site useful. Yes, we mark
living people with the label Private to protect them. In the case of Alma
it appears the label might be applied incorrectly. She was born c. June
1899 in Shawmut, Pike County, AR. That is all the information that is in
the database for her. The software I use to create the website determines
when to apply the Private label and it seem(s) to err on the side of
caution. I like it that way but will check to see if it is being too
cautious.
I'm forwarding the changes to Cindy so she can add them to the database.

Dear Don,
I appreciate your recent letter and inquiry relative to your grandfather
Welch Clyde Kelley born 1897 in Shawmut (Pike, Arkansas) and died 1974 in
Nashville, Arkansas. Although I do not know of a family tie with the
Kelley's of the Shawmut area and my family ... I do have ... information
that may be helpful. Your grandfather's parents were James William Kelley
and Sarah E. Calley. They were married in Nevada County, Arkansas on
November 8, 1888. They had nine children. I have not been able to identify
one of them by name. James William Kelley was the son of Robert F. Kelley
and Elizabeth A., (maiden name) not determined. It appears Robert F. Kelley
arrived at Shawmut during the 1880's.
I have enclosed some information including a copy of the marriage record of
J.W. Kelley and S.E. Calley. In the pages of notes I made ... correction to
the 1900 census information ... Eual Kelley was indicated incorrectly as a
"daughter" in the original record and the birth month for William Norman
Kelley was incorrect. I also corrected the birth year for Eula Kelley to
1889 and added the marriage year for reference.
There was a Dixon H. Kelley living at Shawmut, Arkansas who married Minnie
Morris. They are buried in the Lee Cemetery at Shawmut ... Robert F. Kelley
and Elizabeth had six children with three still living in 1900. Also there
is a marriage of J.L. Lee of Delight, Arkansas to E.E. Kelley of Shawmut,
Arkansas on October 21, 1906 in Pike County, Arkansas. Do you know if E.E.
Kelley is a sister of your grandfather? ... I would appreciate a family
record of Welch Clyde Kelley and Myrtis R. Huddleston.
Sincerely,
David L. Kelley

he later built the first church of Shawmut - a one room Baptist church
eventually moved two miles west on the Shawmut-Murfreesboro road. When

Dear Don,
I visited the Family History Library downtown Friday evening, Saturday
morning and evening, and was able to find information that carries your
Kelley family lineage to your fourth great grandfather Charles Kelley
(1777-1836) and his wife Elizabeth Howard (1787-1854). The Charles Kelley
family information was a part of the Ancestral File (tm) database Version
4.13 and was submitted by Dora M. Eldred, 110 Russell Ct., Pineville, LA
71360. Charles Kelley and Elizabeth Howard had descendants who settled in
Ashley County, Arkansas by 1870. Several years ago I had a correspondent
who wrote me about the "Promised Land" Kelley's of Ashley County, Arkansas.
They are of this family ... I did not know this at that time.
I have reprinted the (original) six pages of notes (there was ... some ...
correction) and have added 10 more pages. They are enclosed. There is a
marriage record of R.F. Kelley and Emily Betts on October 12, 1865 in Coosa
County, Alabama (copy enclosed). It would appear this is Robert F. Kelley.
The county is correct for 1865 (Elmore County was created in 1866 from
Autauga and Coosa) and he has returned from the Civil War in April 1865 and
available for marriage. This (could) pose a couple of possibilities. This
is a first marriage (for him) or her name was Emily Elizabeth. The 1900
Pike County Census indicates Robert F. Kelley and Elizabeth his wife had
been married 31 years (abt 1869) ... Dixon H. Kelley son of Robert F. was
born in 1868. If he is Robert and Elizabeth's son then they were married
for more than 31 years. Future research may be helpful in providing some
answers.
Dixon Kelley father of Robert F. Kelley had a second marriage to Mrs.
Dorothy Gay on April 28, 1879 in Elmore County, Alabama (copy enclosed).
Sincerely,
David L. Kelley
