J.W. Covington Died Last Friday
On Friday of last week the messenger of death visited this community and
carried away one of our old residents, J.W. Covington, a kind neighbor and
a true friend.
Mr. Covington was born in Clark county in 1851, but in early life moved to
this county where he spent most of his life. He lived in Delight for many
years and was widely known for his rugged honesty and for his lofty
Christian character. He had a quiet, gentle dignity so fitting and becoming
a perfect gentleman.
In speaking of others he seemed never to give way to the frailty so common
with the human family of criticizing his neighbors. His long life ran along
as quietly and evenly as the silver stream of a beautiful river gliding
along toward the sea of eternity, with many more silent eddies than roaring
cataracts.
He loved the church, was faithful to his vows and trusted in God with
childlike simplicity. As a husband he was true, loyal and affectionate. As
a father he was kind, patient and indulgent; as a friend, true and
dependable. He, while passing along the highway of life, made friends of all
with whom he came in contact. His life has been a benediction to the people
of this community.
Deceased is survived by his widow; on sister Mrs. James Deal of Amity; two
sons, W.W. of Texarkana and R.B. of this place; six daughters, Mrs. Addie
Johnson of Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Gussie Gill of Center, Texas; Mrs.
Dora Hale of Prescott; Mrs. B.O. Phelps of Okolona; Mrs. Bess Galloway of
this place and one stepdaughter, Mrs. C.E. Reid of this place. He is also
survived by 33 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and a host of other
relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted at the Methodist church here Saturday by
Rev. C.C. Cade of Murfreesboro, assisted by C.A. Kizzia and R.W. Stell of
this place. Burial was in the Brocktown cemetery.
