STREAM OF LIFE
As you read this I will be in Dallas giving to Clara White Carrigan the
memories sent to her by several kind residents of Murfreesboro. In
response to a plea in last week's column for information pertaining to
Ezekiel Thomas White and his wife, Bell Westerman, my telephone rang and
I started a journey backward into time and memory. Three days later I
stood in College Hill Cemetery. I gazed about at the tall, green trees
walling in the silent graves, some with stones bearing names and dates
and many other with only a small native rock to mark a final resting
place. Some are perhaps unmarked even in this simple way.
In the stillness of the June morning we watched a lone hawk flying silent
sentry duty above this haven of rest. Our search brought our gaze to rest
on the small oval, gray stone marking the grave of Bell Westerman White.
The unmarked stone rested in the shadow of the taller, native, brown stone,
also unmarked, of Stacy Westerman, Bell's mother; in death as in life a
mother stood as protector over her child.
From the alert minds of Mrs. Walls and Mrs. Strawn came many childhood
memories of the Whites and Westermans. They well remember Bell Westerman as
a pretty girl of average size with blue eyes. Her hair was almost black and
naturally curly. Bell wore her hair up, as was the style of the day, and
when she took it down it tumbled about her shoulders. A daughter, Clara,
was born to Zeke and Bell in 1902 and Bell died of swamp fever in 1905 and
was buried in College Hill Cemetery.
After Zeke and Bell married they lived with her parents, Newt and Stacy
Westerman. The Westerman home was a large, one story house with a wide
hall running thru it. It was located across the Muddy Fork River. Stella
and Beulah Buckley lived close to the Westermans and attended school and
church with the Westerman children. The Westerman children were Amanda
Tucker, Della Reese, Ann Henderson, Mary and Martha, both married Stewarts,
Bell White, Jack and Will. At that time the school and church both met in
the same one room building called "Over in the Fork of the River." At a
meeting in the building a vote was taken and Heneretta Brown White's name
of College Hill was chosen as the name of the building and the cemetery
that was to become her final resting place.
Liddie Coker was the mother of Stacy Westerman, grandmother of Bell and
great-grandmother of Clara White Carrigan. Stella and Beulah Buckley hid by
the chimney in Liddie Coker's house and listened as she talked to herself.
When Liddie discovered them, they ran into a nearby orchard and hid
themselves. Liddie, dressed in her ankle-length, black riding habit, would
lead her mare Fannie to a stump in her yard. She would climb onto the stump
and from there mount Fannie and ride side saddle from "Over in the Fork of
the River" into Murfreesboro. Swinging from her arm as she rode, and
everywhere she went, was a large, long, black and white checkered handbag
which Mrs. Stella Walls vividly recalls. Mrs. Walls and Mrs. Strawn are
third cousins to Clara White Carrigan. Their grandmother Oliver was a
sister to Stacy Westerman.
After Bell's death, Zeke (Ezekiel) White returned to Mt. Ida then called
Black Springs, with his small daughter Clara. He told her, "I've got to
make a living. You can be a good girl or a bad girl." Until he died Zeke
was very proud of Clara and told his relatives what a good girl she was.
Zeke married a second time to a woman named Alice and two daughters were
born of this union. Zeke's third wife was named Martha and to them were
born four daughters and one son. Zeke's father's name is unknown, but his
mother was Henrietta Brown and she bore six children; Hany, Zeke, Harvey,
Marvey; and two daughters, Lizzie and Billy. After Mr. White's death his
widow married George Holland, a bachelor, and bore him four children: Tom,
Mae, Paralee, and Jewell. Tom Holland still resides in Murfreesboro and is
about 70 years old. Mr. Holland is a half-uncle to Clara White Carrigan.
Other of Clara's relatives in Murfreesboro that are known to me are Mrs.
Ben Lingo and Mrs. Horace White. Their mothers were sisters of Bell
Westerman. Mrs. Kenneth Lockaby and Pearl Brock are also relatives.
Evelyn Jackson, whose hobby is cataloging cemeteries, has furnished much
information for this article. Both she and Jimmy Keyes called and gave me
the information about Mrs. Ben Lingo. Edna McHughes read last week's
article and called Mrs. Pearl Stringer who then called me. Zeke White in
later years visited in the home of Henry and Pearl Stringer. At that time
Zeke was a barber. Mrs. Stringer has a picture of Zeke.
Mrs. Stella Walls and Mrs. Beulah Strawn took me to College Hill Cemetery
and told me of their tenderly nurtured memories of the Whites and
Westermans.
THANK YOU: Evelyn Jackson, Mrs. Ben Lingo, Edna McHughes, Pearl Stringer,
Jimmy Keyes, Vivian White, Mrs. Tom Holland, Mrs. Stella Walls, Mrs.
Beulah Strawn for letting me take your memories to Clara. By your
compassion you have made Clara's cherished dream a reality. You have sent
Clara a "smile" to replace her tears.

Pioneer Citizen Passes Away. J.H. Elam, of College Hill, Died Tuesday Night
of Paralysis. J.H. Elam, one of the oldest and most respected citizens of
this section of the state, died at his home near College Hill at 11 o'clock
Tuesday night (January 5, 1926). Mr. Elam had not been in good health for
some time but it was not thought dangerous as he was able to be up most of
the time, but about a week ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis and
continued to grow worse until his death. Mr. Elam was 72 years of age, and
lived in this county for many years and has raised a large family of boys
and girls, most of whom survive him. He was a good, christian gentleman,
always standing for the things that tend to make better towns, communities,
churches, and schools and his influence will be sorely missed in the
community where he lived. His remains were laid to rest in the College Hill
cemetery Thursday afternoon amid a large congregation of sorrowing
relatives and friends who gathered there to pay their last respects to his
memory. He is survived by his wife, two sons, George and Owen and four
daughters, Mmes. Isabel Garrett, Vienna Williams, Ella Blount and Mary

In Memoriam. Mrs. Mattie Henry Dowd Elam. Friends and relatives were
inexpressibly shocked last Saturday morning, when the news was circulated
that Mrs. George Elam had passed away at 12:30 A.M. For two weeks she had
been confined to her bed, but her unfailing cheerfulness perhaps more than
any other one thing had lulled any fears those ministering to her may have
felt. With constant regard for others, she would make light of her
sufferings. "Don't wear yourself out coming to see me. I'll be sure to let
you know if I'm not getting along well" she admonished her devoted Mother,
just two days before she died. In the same spirit when early in the week
some one, remembering the son in College at Fayetteville, begged, "Let me
write Lethel you are sick" she refused saying, "Why worry the poor boy? No,
we'll wait til I get better." And so the Death Angel slipped into that
unsuspecting home and claimed the brave spirit which had so staunchly
guarded the comfort, the peace of mind of the loved ones there and wafted
it to a better land. At midnight, Mrs. Elam awoke suffering. Mr. Elam,
alarmed went to a neighbor's to call her faithful physician, but before
either could return or Dr. Alford could arrive the end had come. With only
a kind neighbor and her youngest son Dowd present, Mrs. Elam had closed her
eyes upon this life to open them in a better world. Born Jan. 29, 1881,
Mattie Henry Dowd Elam was 49 years 9 months and 10 days old. She was
married to Mr. Geo. Elam, November 18, 1903. To them were born four sons,
Bryan, Lethel, Hicks, and Dowd. These four fine boys and their sorrowing
father survive her, as do her stricken mother, Mrs. J.G. Price, one
brother, Mr. Louis Dowd of California, three half brothers, Mobie, John,
and Bill Price and scores of friends and more distant relatives. Mrs. Elam
was a sunny, cheerful disposition, which impressed all her associates in
her every day contacts. Her merry laugh was one of her most marked
characteristics, carried her Christianity into every day living, every act
showed a sweet charity toward all and malice toward none. Having given her
heart to God and united with the church at the tender age of eleven she
proceeded to exemplify her religion in her daily life, with the result that
all lives that she had touched were brightened, made better. One of her
friends remarked to the writer of these lines, 'I knew Mrs. Elam for some
years and can say she had one of the most cheerful, pleasant dispositions I
ever knew. I never saw her in the least impatient or cross, she was always
sunny, sweet, happy.' Her funeral was one of the largest ever held in
Murfreesboro the Christian church, where it was held at 10 o'clock Sunday
morning could not seat all the friends who crowded in, sad faced and with
tear dimmed eyes to listen to the beautiful tribute paid her by Rev. Jno.
F. Reese of Nashville. Her bier was banked with flowers, mute testimony of
the love in which she was held. A selected choir sang several appropriated
songs, friends were given the last chance to look at the peaceful face
within the flower embanked casket and the sad journey to the family burying
ground was begun. Mattie Dowd Elam, devoted daughter, faithful wife, self
sacrificing mother, true friend, has passed from our midst, but her sweet
example, her tender love and ministration will live in the hearts of those
she left behind. To her sorrowing ones, we would beg - Grieve not as those
who have no hope. Your loved on has but been called Home, there to await
you. Fix your thoughts on the blessed promise that after this life is done
and you join her at last you will dwell in the house of the Lord forever. -

PIKE COUNTY ARKANSAS CEMETERY RECORDS
Pike County Extension Homemakers
The Pike County Extension Homemakers Council started their research, an
inventory of Pike County, Arkansas cemeteries, in the 1960's with an update
in 1983-1984. In 1986 they published their compiled cemetery records in a
447 page book entitled "Pike County, Arkansas Cemetery Records." In its
introduction is says, "Because of the age and conditions of many markers
and the handwritten lists that were turned in, we readily admit that there
will be some unavoidable mistakes either in dates or spelling of these
names. Also, many graves were unmarked. We hope this book will assist
people in tracing family trees ... or have an interest in Pike County."

ELAM (BLOUNT)
John H. (b. 1853 d. 1926) and Nancy Elam of Murfreesboro, Arkansas had a
daughter by the name of Ella Elam who married my great uncle, F.S. Blount.
I am looking for the death dates of both Ella and F.S. Blount. I assume
they are buried in the family plot at College Hill Cemetery in
Murfreesboro. Also, if anyone knows, did Ella and F.S. Blount have any
children? Thanks in advance for any help on this family. Betty G. Schimpf
in Ohio. Email: bettyg@wcoil.com; Address: 1608 Chandler Drive, Lima, Ohio
45805.
